"Well it appears I've been hacked.

I tried to log on this morning and suddenly out of no where I get a message demanding my Authenticator key. This of course is rather odd as I dont have an authenticator."

Direct quote from wyrmrestaccord.net, our server's forums. That's not even the only hacking message that's been posted today. Can you not see that the reason for your problem is right in front of your face? "This of course is rather odd as I dont have an authenticator." DUH

I can't post this on wra.net. As much as I want to, I can't post this in the guy's thread. I'll just bitch and mumble here. $1 if you use your cellphone. $6 if you want the keychain. With either you get a spiffy pet. $6. The cost of keeping your account secure is $6. A one-time charge of $6. And day after day after day they're seeing multiple posts about being hacked. And they don't spend $6.

This makes my head hurt.

Yes, get an authenticator!

If you have an iPhone, it's even free. :)

Getting wow-hacked would not be fun at all.

Yes! I highly recommend that everyone does! I have mine, happily. I got it as soon as WoW became my full-time game.

Hehe, this. I'm all like, "Yaaaaay, I get a free authenticator, wheeeee!"

Free things make me happy.

There are definitely some other steps Blizzard could take (I'm astonished that they don't have a lockout after x wrong passwords), but it's ridiculous that people aren't even taking the steps available to them.

Agreed. There are things Blizz should do, but this is an easy thing that people can do for themselves.

I think I remember a suggestion posted somewhere that Blizzard (or whoever's in charge of the game packaging... maybe the parent company?) include Authenticators in the Cata box. I wish they'd do this to cut down on the ":( :( Hacked!", too.

That'd be smart! Though I wonder what would happen with everyone who has one already. Backup one?

Considering how much money I've given them already, I'm not too eager to send them more. I don't own a cellphone (if I'm not near a phone, 95% of the time I don't want to be contacted by people anyways) so that's out of the question as well. Most people are just plain stupid when it comes to computer security so it's not surprising so many people get hacked. Although you can't be ever vigilant and sometimes you stupid friends screw you over (*cough*). I am just really really stingy, and really lazy, and that time off when Blizz was getting my stuff back was rather nice, kinda like a vacation.

I remember when I saw that the CE of XIV comes with an authenticator I though, "Why don't MMOs just include them now a days? The market for gold/items/accounts in every MMO (new and old) is huge, so it would probably save them time and energy in reverting hackings to just make everyone more secure right off the bat."

*points upwards* Perhaps Cata will, too! Morn/bacon thought he saw something about it!

Ya I read something about that awhile ago as well. I think the main issue was that, apparently, blizzard is having a hard time keeping the Tokens in stock as it is, to try and get enough to distribute them to the millions who will buy cataclysm is probably a logistical nightmare.

Huh, I'd believe that!

Considering that authenticators are actually a loss for the company, as they only charge for shipping. If I recall, the authenticator itself costs around $50 to make. So I really don't accept "I don't want to give them more money" as an excuse.

Plus you've been hacked before. Even less excuse.

That's fine if you don't accept it. After all, it's not your money.

Oh, side note, the WoW Authenticators are the same model as the FFXI ones (and presumably the XIV ones) and they have an MSRP of around 12-15 bucks for the tokens. The software needed for the overall system is where they take a bigger hit (looks like 6-8 grand for the full system if I understand this right) but, as far as I can see, they only need to buy that once.
