I was poking through Netflix to find something to watch tonight, and Frozen Land caught my eye. Not because I wanted to see Disney's Frozen, but because the plot looked interesting:

Their usual hunting grounds depleted after their shaman begins practicing the dark arts, a starving tribe of Inuit nomads dispatches three brave adventurers to locate a hidden promised land of legend in this epic animated adventure.

I decided to check it out. I think this is the first time a font ever kept me watching a movie. How cool is it?

While googling to try to find out the name of the font, I discovered that (unsurprisingly) Disney is unhappy with this being called Frozen Lands. Turns out, this time Disney seems to be in the right. Check out each movie's logo:

Then the most damning evidence: The movie had originally been named The Legend of Sarila and was renamed to Frozen Land at the last minute.

The sad part about all this is that Frozen Land didn't need to try to trick viewers, it's a pretty good movie on its own. Not perfect (I HATED the animation quality/style), but pretty good (loved the voice acting and plot, and liked just about everything else). While I haven't seen Frozen, I've heard nothing but bad things about it. I bet Frozen Land is the better movie.

My issues with the animation style are likely personal -- I haven't liked the style of most major animated movies lately. You can check it out for yourself and decide:

I have such an odd fondness for the "We are not the latest Disney animated films but we want to make you think we are" less-than mediocre films that show up on Netflix; I saw this one and thought, "Another one for the 'let's put this on when we want to multitask' list!" But I don't think I will survive that lemming, now that I've seen the trailer. ^_^

Yeah, the lemming is awful, but at least it's used less than the "cute", "funny" animal sidekicks are used in other movies. For me, it was worth putting up with it for the rest of the movie.

The font looks like written Inuktitut. You might want to check out the Iqualiut News for examples.

Ah, thanks for the clue! I didn't get too far on google.

Weird. I've heard it's not perfect, but also a lot of good things about it. Like the fact that it doesn't follow the traditional princess formula for how the plot is resolved, which actually makes it a really good thing for that particular message.

Hmm, strange. I have zero interest in seeing it, so I didn't pay much attention to what the reviews were saying other than that they didn't like it.

The reviews on this film have been pretty much opposites: either they loved it or they hated it. I try not to put much weight on reviews though. When the first part of The Hobbit came out I read awesome reviews but when I watched the film I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

I must admit I did like the animation style of the "Frozen Lands" movie (and I can see why Disney would be mad at the re-naming of this movie!). Except for the lemming. The lemming has to die.

Hmm that'd make sense. I guess I ran into only those who hated it. Makes sense that folks would be polar opposites on it.

That lemming was easily the worst thing in the movie. Luckily it didn't show up as much as some "funny" animal sidekicks do.

I want to see this now! I love Campbellian hero stories, and I love traditional mythology, and I've never seen anything that plays with Inuit legends!

I can't stand the animation style, but that's normal. I wish studios would go back to hand-drawn.

I recommend seeing it! It's not the best movie ever made, and it has an annoying animal "funny" sidekick, but all in all, I enjoyed it.

Agreed on the animation, I haven't liked it in a long time either. Hand-drawn (or at least in that style) is a lot better.
