Not reading your whole post because I don't want GoT spoilers (we haven't started this season yet) , but - while I agree that self-published books are often dreck, I've had good luck with the last things I've read from Smashwords. Of course I have mostly gotten books that have been recced to me elsewhere, so there's a filter.
