I can't remember if I've read any of Simak's short stories, but I do remember reading and enjoying some of his books, like The Goblin Reservation. But I think this was while I had more tolerance for dated writing.
Haven't heard of Wildcatter, but I do generally like Dave Duncan's writing. He is insanely prolific, and I prefer his fantasy to sci-fi, I think, but I tend to like his stuff.
