The principal of a Palo Alto middle school may not invite a popular speaker back to an annual career day after he told girls they could earn a good living as strippers.

Oh my god, you mean he told teenagers the truth? What was this man thinking?!

I'm sad to see this coming out of Palo Alto (which is a 15 minute or so drive from me).

Fried has given a popular 55-minute presentation, "The Secret of a Happy Life," at the school's career day the past three years. He counsels students to experiment with a variety of interests until they discover something they love and excel in.

Heavens forbid that a girl actually likes to dance and is comfortable with taking money from men just to let them look at her. (To me, I'd think the men should be more bothered by strip clubs than woman -- paying to look and nothing else? Women getting paid just to be seen dancing? To me, it seems like men would be suckers to go there!)

Bah. A woman can be anything, stripper or exotic dancer included! Bah.

Hmm. I must not be as liberal as I thought I was, because I wouldn't invite that guy back, either. Mostly because I'd rather he encouraged the girls to go to college and get good-paying jobs where they aren't exploited everyday.

I agree. I've personally known a number of strippers and people in the porn industry. Yes, you can make oo-gobs of money. No, it's not 'easy' money, it puts you in contact with people who tend to be exploitative creeps, it can crush your soul and grind you to bits, and even if you can do it for a while, eventually, your shelf-life expires. Some people can do it, true, but most of the people I've talked to didn't do it because they 'chose' to do it instead of a career in nuclear physics or investment banking or something. They chose it because they had *no other options* and had to find some way to feed themselves or their kids.

Granted, the kids were smart alecs and kind of cornered him but...he could have handled it a bit better, I think. Had I been the principal, I don't think I would have invited him back next year.
