"..." Sometimes I hate S-E (FFXI bitching)

While I can understand wanting to drive people back to less popular game activities, in this case it pisses me off because it was S-E's doing that made it unpopular.

From POL.com:

Navigational charts will be added in the October version update. Each chart displays the location of a secret point where adventurers will find a surprise awaiting! Charts may be obtained by completing the quest "Inside the Belly."

So we'll have to fish up some fish to do the "Inside the Belly" quest. Bets on how high of a level fish it will be? Will the "surprise" be something good enough that people will actually level fishing to be able to catch the fish to do the quest?

And if you don't have a sand charm yet, you better darned well get it now. Know how hard they'll be to get after the update?

Dear S-E,

I had loved fishing! I spent many many many hours a day doing it! Then you ruined it by changing the system! I even sold my LSR because of the system change! Now you want to force people back to it? That's pretty low, even for you.

With no love,
Thistle

Yeah, seriously. x.x I used to fish lots before they changed the system. Now they've made it so that *only* bots can fish without hurting themselves. WTG Squeenix. ~.~

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I was thinking that people might start bot fishing just to get whatever the reward for this is!

[identity profile] phoenix-leandra.livejournal.com 2005-09-14 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't had time to play in a long while 'cause of school, but did they change it again? Last I checked you got a fish on the line, it had a health bar you wore down by pushing left and right directionals opposite to the rod. That system actually seemed more fun than the very original to me. Have they changed it back again or something? Or tweaked it to make it suck? What's been happening while I'm away? ;_;

[identity profile] linmayu.livejournal.com 2005-09-14 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. While the new system is certainly more entertaining than the old one, my hands start to hurt like hell after catching, like 3 fish. So I haven't fished much since that happened.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2005-09-14 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No, that's the way it still is. People either hated the original way and liked this new one, or (experienced fishers) liked the original way and hated this new one. :/

[identity profile] kelen.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I dread this too, for you KNOW it will never be easy. Oh no, you'll have to turn in hundreds and hundreds of fish at great cost to yourself to get something small and likely shitty.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You're right. There's no way you'll get the chart with just one or two fish.

Bah.

Hopefully whatever the "surprise" is isn't so good.

[identity profile] pomr.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! Another event to avoid like the plague! =*.*=

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
*snicker* But what if the "surprise" is something cool?

[identity profile] pomr.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Then that's just too bad for me, because I'm never going to fish. Ever. :) Not after all the crap I've seen D go through, and the need for bots or special controllers. NO way. :)

Honestly, the events I've seen have all been mostly crap. I liked the swimsuits, but that's the only one I liked, and the event itself was a pain in the rear. :) Goldfish scooping? Boring and annoying. :) The fishtank? Crazy expensive to make, and requiring far too many crafts -- I would not have one were it not for your incredible uber kindness! Blitz Buffalo? The sashes just don't seem worth the annoyance of being knocked into another zone for. :)

Call me crazy, but...either the rewards should be nice (and the swimsuits are nice for being pretty even if their granted abilities are more or less worthless), or they should be fun (Haven't done a single SE event that was actually fun to do. Obviously their idea of fun and mine doesn't jibe.). What would be ideal would be both! :) That won't ever happen though, at least I don't think so. :)

I enjoyed playing with others -- the Azimuth Circle was ITSELF annoying, but at least I got to spend time with great folks doing it. :)

You missed last year's Summerfest, which was actually quite fun (though I know Draque was annoyed with it after Kyssa and I spent almost two hours looking for points in CN). Being levelcapped at 1 and running around in scary dungeons was exciting. Too bad someone figured out you could use the event's perma-sneak/invis to mine Ifrit's Cauldron without risk, so Squeenix decided not to do it again. ;_; I hate it when perfectly good events get ruined by people who like to exploit stuff.

[identity profile] pomr.livejournal.com 2005-09-13 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Wowser.

So...you got to run around uber dangerous locations but were Invisible and had Sneak up for the duration. I'm not surprised that people found a way to exploit that and ruin it for everyone else. :)

Sometimes it really feels like the game is designed for just that; abuse and other people screwing up your fun because of it. Thus far what I've seen really hasn't impressed me all that much. It is either far more work than the rewards are worth, or it just isn't fun to begin with. I /tried/ to smite a buffalo, I was right outside of Windy. I got knocked back to the opposite side of the city. Yeah. That's fun. Whee. :) That knockback ability has to be the most annoying thing ever. :)

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2005-09-14 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with Lin. Last year's Summerfest was pretty darned cool, but unfortunately exploitable. I know one person who used it to get their AF, and others who used it to mine in IC, and others who used it to do the last step of the PLD job-opening quest. :/ I can see why they didn't bring it back this year, but it's still too bad. It really was fun.

Hold the rocks plz ::P

Hmm. Fishing is actually Okay for me...Started after the stamina patch actually. It fits my stupid 30 minutes-at-a-time schedule perfectly.

I mean, at lvl 21 I skill up from Nebs on the ferry. Sure sometimes the bite-rate blows but there's always something happening on the ferry now. NIN AF? Beat it. Sea Horror? Died from it. Silverhook? Raised the aftermath.

As for "Inside the Belly", I got about 4.5 stacks of dark bass while leveling fishing from 1-15 in bastok. It's not as hard as it seems. If you're using lures the only cost you'll incur is broken rods, which is easy enough to avoid if you play it smart.

The problem is, anyone with a RSI issue has a really hard time fishing now. If I fish even just for a couple minutes, I get major pain. Fish for longer than a few minutes and my hands go numb. (I've used both keyboard and controler with the same results.) I got to fishing 61 pre-change, but had to give it up.

Who was it the other day I was talking to... I think it was actually Ead, but you were the inspiration. I was going to write up a post of Beanie's 20 best quests. It'd point out various quests I thought worth doing for one reason or another and tell you a bit of what's involved with them. Like, the "A Timely Visit" would definitely be there as a must do. But I was going to put the Oswald quest sequence in there under the 'category' of "Best quest with useless reward" or something phrased like that ^^;

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2005-09-14 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, that'd be funny! I'd be interested in seeing it if you do ever write that up! :)

I'd love to see:

Beanie's Top Twenty
Beanie's FLOP Twenty
Beanie's Crucial Twenty

Please? Okay! Thanks!! ;)
