"short form"

You kids get off my lawn! *shakes cane*

While this post mentions WoW, it's not about WoW, so all you non-players don't need to run off!

There I was, happily online this morning, when some random WoW kid insults the whole group of us. "u r all morons" or something like that. Mostly I try to ignore this crap, because if I responded to it all the time I'd wear holes in my keyboard, but now and then I can't help it.

I responded back, politely suggesting that he spell correctly if he intended to call us stupid. (Polite, seriously! I find that gets the most amusing responses.) He replied that 'u' is just as acceptable as 'you' because it's a "short form" of the word.

ARG! *pulls hair out*

I can't imagine the trouble teachers must have with this crap. I bet they get essays full of "u", "r", "ur"...

It is so funny that you should say this. I have a woman on my f-list who recently started a new job as a college professor teaching a course on writing, and just a few days ago she made a post about students doing this exact thing in her classes.

Ha! I hope she gets through her classes sane and without going gray! I'd probably end up strangling the kids. (Though I guess college level "kids" could probably kick my butt, so I'd need to resist. :P )

... Gah! People... *mumble*

[identity profile] kamalloy.livejournal.com 2009-09-16 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's amazing how many people think that "thru" is an acceptable spelling.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2009-09-17 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well they use it at fast food places! Drive thru! So it must be right!" I could totally see people using that so-called logic...

Something tells me that kid will not be impressing anyone in job interviews...

Ha. Could you imagine a resume full of u, ur, etc? I bet someone could make an amusing website full of resumes and applications like that...

Now, I don't claim to be perfect with my typing, I look back at it all the time and find stupid mistakes. But, at least I generally try. I mean, in games I won't use punctuation all the times and sometimes my spelling isn't great but at least I try. I passed english class, ok I had to goto summer school for grade 11 and 12 but that was mostly cause I drew sketches during it and never did the work.

Sometimes I worry about the future, but then I remember, "Wait...when the future comes, I will be a king among men since most of the people around me won't be able to think in anything other thn txt tlk or msn spek!11!" Oh god...it's got me! It's like zombies, except more retarded.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2009-09-17 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, I don't claim to be perfect at all! I typo like mad. And, I hate to admit, at some times I type short on purpose. Never 'u', 'ur', and things like that, but 'inc' for 'incoming' in WoW BGs -- there's just no time to type!

It's like zombies, except more retarded.

*snickers!*

My favourite part about typing with people who do a bunch of those 'short forms' is that often I type way faster and far more correctly then they do. Although I'm sure if you put like a cellphone or a crackberry (or god forbid one of those hideous love children of crackberry and cellphone) they would utterly crush me in speed...

You know what it might be, maybe it's cause I'm Canadian so I put a bunch of u's in words so they can't escape into my sentences. It's like, an alphabetical prison for them.

Also -- Get Off My Lawn is an AWESOME WoW addon that kills a lot of the stupid spam in the game. =)

... No way! I'm so behind on addons! *checks it out now* :D

Wow, that sounds pretty interesting! I should look for that...

I don't consider myself a grammar nazi, but this stuff makes me grind my teeth. If I were a teacher, I would definitely be giving out severe markdowns if not outright failures on research papers and the like where someone tried such usages.

It's so utterly irritating to me because it is completely unnecessary. In-game chat IS NOT a cellphone text message, and this kind of thing is exactly the reason I outright refuse to text: Because so-called "word short forms" are steadily making their way out of text messages and into other media.

I only saw part of Idiocracy, and what I did see of it made me sick to my stomach. I might have seemed funnier if it didn't feel so close to the truth.
