These women are very, very, very stupid...

Damn you, basketball. I usually run home for lunch and watch Price is Right while I eat, but today there's basketball on, so I had to watch something else. The View seemed the least offensive of my choices.

I turned it on mid-show, so I'm not sure how they got on this topic.

Woman 1: A woman doesn't have to orgasm to become pregnant.
Woman 2&3, surprised tone: She doesn't?
Woman 4: No, only the man does.

Wiki tells me the cast of this show is:

Barbara Walters
Joy Behar
Elisabeth Hasselbeck
Whoopi Goldberg
Sherri Shepherd

How in the world do these women not know these BASIC FACTS? And this is a show aimed at women, so they're doing an extra disservice.

Maybe I should have watched basketball...

Oi. *facepalms*

And really, even the guy doesn't have to have an orgasm; pre-ejaculate can contain sperm as well. So yeah. *facepalms again*

Exactly. I had included the line "All of their facts are wrong!" to try to cover that, but then I realized it made it look like I was disagreeing on the orgasm/pregnancy thing. These women. Sigh.

I admit that I can't even stay in the same room when that show is on. It hits my embarassment squick so hard. *g*

This was my first (and last) time watching it. It's just so very, very bad.

[identity profile] theashwake.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy fuck. Please tell me you're shitting me. Please.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I were. These are older women, most with kids, how can they not know this basic stuff? How could they be on TV, talking about this, when they don't know? How many women are going to listen to that and believe it?

[identity profile] blightheart.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Are these women insane? Everyone knows you can get pregnant by kissing, just like most STIs.

(please don't think I'm serious)

*snickers* You should take over co-hosting The View!

[identity profile] blightheart.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny they call it "The View" since I suspect the only thing these gals can see from their vantage point is the inside of their own asses.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
It just boggles me that that show is still on the air. I think the view of the inside of their own asses would be more entertaining than the show itself. ...that sounds grosser than I intended it to be.

You must be fun at a colonoscopy. "Oh Doctor, can you turn the monitor this way? I like to watch."

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's exactly what I was trying to avoid implying. :P

[identity profile] bastets-place.livejournal.com 2012-03-15 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, when I had a colonoscopy, I DID watch... My notes (oh, yes, I took notes) indicate it was fascinating. The effect of the pain killers indicates that my primary reaction was "oh... pink". I'm pretty sensitive to pain killer medications. I don't actually remember anything.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Heh! I guess pink makes sense! And much better than other possible colors. c.c

[identity profile] firebyrd.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
That's actually how it's supposed to work with the medications they use during a colonoscopy. It's such a painful experience, they don't want you to remember it, since it can be such an important medical procedure. Unfortunately the anesthesiologist messed up on my stepsister once and she was aware of everything. :/

Aie. That's the stuff of nightmares. D:

I enjoy the show, on the few occasions that I have seen it, but the really important theme is "sarcasm". They employ it nearly constantly and fairly strongly. Women 2 and 3 were absolutely being sarcastic - a long time ago a rape case hinged on the fact that the woman got pregnant, and raped women can't get pregnant because they don't have orgasms. Or something like that. They discussed it pretty long then all about how absurd it all was. Certainly every woman there knows that no one has to orgasm for pregnancy to take place (unless they had a guest on the show). They have also done segments on the subject of pulling out = parenthood.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
OH! Well good, I'm very, very glad to hear that. I'm not at all familiar enough with it to realize it was. Thanks!

[identity profile] veloxe.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
The first thing I did was laugh at that. Without much more context I assume they were just dicking around or being sarcastic because that just looks like a joke setup to me. The real sad part is there are people who don't know anything about pregnancy, like that one chick I knew who thought having sex in the shower meant you couldn't get pregnant because of the hot water... but will take the joke seriously.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-16 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently it was sarcasm! Though it didn't sound like it at all to me. I'm glad it was!

[identity profile] quistie.livejournal.com 2012-03-20 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I did read it as sarcasm. Certainly that "No, only the man does" line was not meant to be taken seriously.

That being said, I am not sure making a statement like that on the air is a smart thing to do. There are plenty of people out there who would just take that as gospel.

[identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com 2012-03-20 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's true I wasn't listening with my full attention, but at the time I didn't hear sarcasm at all, so I'd say you were right.
