Help me, friends list!
Apr. 23rd, 2009 10:32 pmI have a security token for work. I have one for FFXI. My desk is cluttered with them! While the saying goes "two's company, three's a crowd", do tokens mind crowds? Wait, no, that's not what I wanted to ask. I've been wondering if *I* need one. I'm just an itty bitty player. Highest character is 71, next highest is 7 (not counting two level 58 DKs). I have no special armor and not much gold. However,
firebyrd was in a similar situation and got her account stolen...
I think I'm good about security. I use only Firefox with no scripts, etc (except when remote logging in to work, that requires IE use, but I only go to that one website with it). So tell me...

Edit: Belatedly I bet I could have made one poll with three questions instead of three polls. Oh well! Next time!

Date: 2009-04-24 06:04 am (UTC)For WoW it's meh for me. Because really, there isn't that much work I've put into it so it's not really worth it. I mean, even if I was hacked it'd take like, a month to relevel if I was serious. But in FFXI, by god so much work and so much time involved in leveling and what not it's so worth it.

Date: 2009-04-24 12:08 pm (UTC)And the bad guys would know that how? If, for example, they slipped something onto your machine, it would hand them an ID and a password.
You'd be surprised how much you're worth. I was surprised to see how many millions some of my casual gear was worth, stuff I've had for ever.
Besides, any gil/loot they would get from you would be a bonus. The camouflage they get from using a real, established account alone is worth the effort for them.
And yes, if you're security conscious, and careful, it is a lot less likely that you'll be compromised. And no, the token won't make you invulnerable. (It will make you a lot harder target than anyone that doesn't have one.)
You're a crafter. I'd say that the extra storage would make it worth it (Bribery works. I expect SE to require the SE accounts and probably tokens sometime in the next year or so.)
I get paid to play with computer security. I probably would have gotten a token just because I'm that much of a geek. I have to deal with the effects of compromised machines and passwords every day. I'll even admit I'm biased against Windows (with the experience to back it up). I've been playing for years now. When I quit, I want it to be by my choice, not because I got hacked. My token helps me sleep at night. ^^

Date: 2009-04-24 04:39 pm (UTC)But yeah, I have it on FFXI (SE's recovery service is so bad there...) but I was wondering if I wanted it for WoW as well. Too bad the same one can't be used for both games!

Date: 2009-04-24 10:28 pm (UTC)I have to wonder how much more FFXI I'd be playing if I didn't have to boot into Windows to do so.

Date: 2009-04-25 03:06 am (UTC)Muhahahhahaha!
But seriously, even running windows, running a safe browser (firefox with adblock, noscript, etc) will eliminate probably 60% of risks. Good antivirus and OS updates will cut out another 30%. Not doing anything stupid with email or pirating obviously virus/rootkit laden software will add another 9%.
The remaining < 1%...Well, not much you can do there. New virulent code, clever new worms, or a determined hacker with time on his hands can't really be stopped. But such resources are very, very rarely dedicated on a random target, particularly just for someone who plays video games.
