I can't go back more than 100 posts in my friends list. On the second page (of 50 posts), there's only a 'next 50' which moves me to the more current posts, or a 'back to the top' post. If I edit the URL myself to make it skip back more, I end up with a blank page.
I haven't seen an LJ news post in ages, so maybe I unfriended them by mistake somehow.
Is this a new thing? I was trying to find an older post...

While I missed the exact day, my LJ turned 16 last week.
First post ever: August 15th, 2002 at 5:35 PM
Isn't that kind of scary? My blog here is old enough to almost be considered an adult.
While I don't post much non-book review stuff anymore (my life is so boring!), I do read my entire friends list. For a while I was doing it only once a week, but I've gotten better about that and now read it a few times a week. I feel a lot more connected with people that way.
Happily the LJ Archive tool still works for me (not everyone is that lucky), so I have an offline backup, as well as an out-of-date online backup at thistlechaser.dreamwidth.org.
Elsewhere you can find me very active on Tumblr (mikhasunthistle.tumblr.com), but that's 100% gaming stuff, nothing RL at all.

Could you be a little more helpful, LJ?
Jun. 14th, 2018 08:14 pmI got an email from LJ, one I never saw before. "What a good idea!" I said as I clicked it to see the full message.

The body is the exact same text as the subject line, not even punctuation! But even more annoying is the lack of something so basic as a link to the post.
The same holds true with those "Someone liked your post!" emails, not even a single link in those.
How can LJ be missing such basic things?

Little LJ things ... bigger election thing
Nov. 8th, 2016 09:15 amI hate it how easy it is to click the like button on posts. It's so easy to be lazy and not comment! I always feel guilty if I just like something, but I suspect that guilt won't last.
Related: I'm still struggling to make LJ usable for me again. I can't find a style that makes my friends list clear and easy to read. Grumpy.
I'm so pissed at political stuff. There was a news story yesterday. If Hillary gets elected, the very first thing the Republicans have said they're going to do is try to impeach her. I swear to god, it's like dealing with children. They worry about the election being stolen from them? Yet they're the ones trying to do that (like telling people they can text their vote if they want to vote for Hillary...). They're worried about voter fraud, yet it was a TRUMP voter who tried to vote multiple times.
Sigh.
I also strongly suspect the news media is trying to make the race seem closer than it really is. The more afraid people are, the more they'll watch the news, so the news has a vested interest in making people afraid.
Stop the world, I want to get off.

So LJ now has a "Like" button. News post here.
I can't see it on my friends page or my main page. I'm still on S1 I think, so maybe that's why. Is anyone else seeing them?
Can't say I like this change at all, though I'm not surprised it happened...

Friends list update
Apr. 23rd, 2016 01:35 pmI've cut just over a dozen people from my friends list, all people who haven't posted in a year or more (or nine years, in one case!). I tried to make sure to leave the people who comment and just not post, but if I made a mistake and cut you when you're still around, sorry! Just leave a comment and let me know, then I'll add you back.
Seems like every year I recommend this person's LJ, but it's worth repeated recommendations!
antarctic_sue spend a good part of each year in the Antarctic, and posts daily pictures from there.
While I know it's not a realistic dream at all, I'd love to live in the Arctic/Antarctic, so through her pictures I get to experience a little taste of life there.
Hope you all enjoy following her, too!

Friending meme?
Jun. 12th, 2014 08:07 amFor some unknown reason, in the last week the number of posts on my friends list has dropped by nearly half. It's a depressing change! I'd like to find some new people to friend, so if anyone has seen a recent friending meme going around, would you link me?
To flesh out this post a bit, here's a blast from the past video.
Kara - Heavy Rain's Dev Trailer:
The video was created to demonstrate some new game engine, but it's a really great (sad!) stand-alone movie.

Friends list cleanup
May. 22nd, 2014 10:43 pmJust a heads up:
I've gone through my friends list and deleted journals that haven't been updated in a year, never friended me back, or I had no idea who they were. (Anyone who fell into that third category was in one of the first two as well.)
If I've removed you in error, please let me know! I had a lot of old, unused LJs still friended and ended up deleting about 40 of them (132 journals friended down to 94!). If you just use yours to comment and not post, that's perfectly fine, just let me know and I'll re-add you. :)

Quickie post, since this is a busy work day, but this wasn't announced in the LJ News feed and it looks like good news:

songdogmi: Livejournal gets a new CEO.
The new CEO used to work at Google, Microsoft, and other big name tech companies, and doesn't want LJ to become another tumblr. Sounds like this could be a good thing!
Edit:
tedwords reports that his book, Pictures of You, is free on Amazon the next five days. My review of it here.

Have a video-- wait, what happened to LJ?
May. 15th, 2014 09:31 amI came to share a video, only to find LJ looks totally different. Different font (ugh, harder to read), different menus. I wish they'd stop changing things! My eyes suck, never before have I been annoyed at font being too big, but it's just too big. Blah.
Anyway! I've loved this string quartet's version of Coldplay's Yellow forever. Seriously, even if you've never even heard of Coldplay or dislike them, check out that music. It's so beautiful! I did some poking around, and that same quartet has done covers of hundreds of rock songs! This one is the best of the ones I've listened to, and I would feel confident saying the best of them all.
The String Quartet Tribute To Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody:
The violin sounds so much like a voice! It's incredible.
Ugh, I had to go to my user page to find something, and it's changed as well. I can't believe they're using this font, it's awful, what the hell is the purpose of a font with a quarter of the letter faded out? Look at the lowercase a, for example. Now I'm really grumpy.
Anyway. From
isiscolo, a rec for Welcome to Night Vale: Constellations (The Thirteenth Take Remix). It's such a sweet story, I finished reading it a couple hours ago and I'm still smiling over it.

Two helpful things for LJ
Dec. 26th, 2013 04:19 pmLate Christmas gifts, of a sort?
1) For years I've read my friendsfriends list (friends of friends, http://www.livejournal.com/users/YOUR NAME/friendsfriends to see it), but so often it's overrun with spammy communities I have no interest in.
susandennis discovered a fix for it: Tack ?show=P onto the end of it! So if you were me, your URL would look like: http://www.livejournal.com/users/thistle_chaser/friendsfriends?show=P
Notes: The friendsfriends list is a paid account feature.
2) I hate side-scrolling. Do you hate side-scrolling, too? If so, and if you use Firefox, this addon is for you. Which addon? This addon! With the nearly doubling of my friends list, I get multiple posts a day with images so wide they force me to side-scroll the whole page. I used to use Adblock to block them, but my list of blocked images was getting really long, and I had no idea if I was slowing my browsing down. With that Image Resizer/Scaler addon, you can resize an image in the page by just right-clicking and dragging. The only downside is that, unlike adblocking, each time you reload the page you have to resize oversized images.
Bonus! 3) Not using Adblock? You really should be! Why in the world would you want to see ads on the internet? Plus it's safer not to see them (since they can spread malicious code). Get Adblock here.
Edit: The reviews on the How to Avoid Huge Ships book on Amazon are really amusing!

Book #5, LJ
Feb. 14th, 2013 04:15 pmDear LJ,
Would it have been so hard to leave the link to use the old interface for posting? The new one is horrible. It takes up way too much landscape, I'm not 12 and therefore do not need bright colorful buttons for every option, and man, it just has so much wasted space. Go visit Google. Check out their homepage. Recall that it hasn't changed in how many years. Know why? Because it gives people what they need without wasting space and adding stupid buttons and a crapton of icons. I feel like I'm trapped in a Word doc.
Please give us the old format back.

Book #5 of 2013 was a miss for me. Infected: Prey, by Andrea Speed. The book's world is our world, with the addition of a new virus. Most of those who get it die, the few that live turn into werecats (big cats: lions, tigers, etc). Unlike more romanticized versions of were-creatures, the people who turn into cats turn into real cats. Four legged, no human thought or personality, just a wild creature that has to be locked in a cage five nights a month.
All that was background though, the main storyline was a mystery. A whodunit. Unfortunately, as I mentioned when I reviewed Dragons Done It, I don't really care for whodunits.
The writing was fine. The characters were mostly fine (the main character was overly sarcastic, which I think was supposed to make him appear clever and above-it-all, but only annoyed me). I like stories about were-animals. There was only one small thing in the books I didn't like (which I'll go into in the next paragraph). But the book just didn't work for me at all. I was bored through it, and I didn't finish it. Unfortunately I had bought the other two books in the series at the same time... (This was also an older book in my To Read pile, before I vowed to never by book series ahead of time, to just buy them one by one.)
The small thing the author did that I didn't like was product placement. Did she get paid by brand name companies? It seemed like a name was getting dropped every paragraph. Coke, Pepsi, Starbucks, every rock band under the sun, movies, TV shows, car brands. Maybe it was supposed to make the world seem more real to the reader, but it did the opposite for me, I kept being reminded of TV shows and movies that get paid whenever they make a shot with a brand name facing the camera. Earlier this year I read White Fang and Call of the Wild (published in 1915 and 1917), and they were way less dated than this book (published in 2010). At one point the main character said "Every teenager in the world has a MySpace page", and I laughed out loud. There was a Dick Cheney shooting people in the face joke. It just didn't work for me.
I started book 6 this morning, Ship Breaker, which seems like it will be better.

Hello to new friends and old!
Jan. 15th, 2013 08:59 amI've been taking part in a few friending memes, so welcome to new people! I hope you'll enjoy having me on your friends list, but if not, feel free to remove me at any time. No hard feelings!
I've been on LJ more than ten years now, and my journal has evolved in that time. I used to write mostly about games I've played (FFX, FFXI, WoW), then I expanded into role playing/creative writing/fanfic, and now I post more about real life things and only now and then dabble back into older themes.
I'm a middle-aged white woman, a failing-but-never-giving-up cook, in a seemingly never-ending battle with my weight, and by profession a technical writer/editor.
I unofficially take part in
50bookchallenge (to read 50 books a year), but because of my lack of free time, I set my goal to 25 books per year instead.
I take great joy in posting wacky/strange/WTF?! images, sometimes sexual but never gory. They're always linked or behind a cut (never displayed outright) and I always use NWS warnings -- I read LJ at work and I know how important it is to have a work safe friends list.
It's a strange feeling to try to describe yourself to others; I haven't made a post like this before. I hope I'm succeeding at both fairly representing myself and making myself not seem like the most boring person on the planet! :)

That's quite enough, LJ...
Jan. 2nd, 2013 01:06 pmI've never before seriously considered leaving LJ. I have a permanent account, which means I paid $125? $150? to be here. I've been posting near-daily (sometimes more than daily!) since August of 2002. That's a darned lot of history.
I know LJ's connection/loading issues are for a "good cause". They let some Russian political people post what they like, and others don't like that, so they launch DoS attacks. That's gone on many times in the past, that's going on now.
I've been patient. I've been loyal. But I'm nearing the end of my rope.
No other site I visit on the net has as many issues as LJ. Tumblr and Twitter both must get a ton more traffic, but both are a lot more stable. I assume Facebook is as well, or I'd hear complaining about it.
Part of the thing that will keep me from leaving is I don't know where I'd go. I don't want to go to DW (I know it's lasted a while, but it reminds me of Insane Journal and the handful of other blogging sites people said would replace LJ). I dislike Tumblr for anything other than reposting fluff. I wouldn't touch Facebook with a ten foot pole.
I suppose I'll stay and ride this trouble out, but unfortunately my friends list is getting quieter and quieter, which doesn't help things. I know I should venture out and find new people to friend, but I've forgotten how. Not being in any fandoms has reduced my contact with outside folks.
Now let's see if this will actually post...

5,096 Journal Entries
Bah! 5,000 posts would have been a big milestone, too. Oh well! Hopefully I'll catch the 10,000 one. :P
My comment stats always surprise me:
43,356 comments received
43,697 comments posted
Look how close those numbers are!
Game of Thrones: While this is in German, it's still really cool to see:
I love seeing how all the computer effects are done! Especially how they did the direwolf.
WoW: I'm down to the lowest amount of gold since... I don't remember. 500K, down from 1.3M at my highest point. (But I'm up to 12 deathchargers!) The... "good"? news is that all the Crimson Deathchargers are duped nearly for sure, which means Blizz will hopefully do something about the price soon.
See, this is the availability and price of the deathchargers across all (US) servers:

Compare that to the charts for the music box, the locket, the tabard, and the favor. All of those are going up slightly, but none like the horse.
As a refresher, when you kill the Lich King with Shadowmourne, he'll drop a box that has an equal chance of turning into one of five items, the horse being one of them.
So why would the number of horses be increasing so quickly, when the other four items are not? Either something went wrong in the code and the horses are now dropping more often than the others or they're being dupped. (Or Blizz changed the code on purpose, but why? On something old like this?)
Thoughts on it being dupped vs caused by some other issue?
Friendslist cleaning and a link
Sep. 9th, 2011 08:04 pmJust a heads up: I deleted about a dozen journals off my friends list. All of them have been very idle, about a year since last posting. If by chance I deleted you and you're still active, please leave a comment and I'll refriend!
In a few cases, I deleted journals that were used only to repost things from forums -- since I read them on those forums, no need for a LJ feed as well.
---
And to give this post a little more purpose, have a link to Beautiful costumes! I've never watched a Miss (Universe|America) show, I have zero interest in such things, but these costumes were amazing. Most of them anyway. The island/water ones tended to be the prettiest, but I loved most all of them.

Terra Nova
Jul. 18th, 2011 08:35 pmWith 129 icons, you'd think I'd have a more fitting one for this. Dogs love bones which is all that's left of dinosaurs?!
Also, why in the world is LJ endlessly trying to load stuff from facebook.com? Every time LJ won't load, which is sadly frequently, it's always "Transferring data from www.facebook.com". Mumble mumble.
Anyway! FOX has been running promos for this Terra Nova show for months now, and every time I see one, I get even more bouncy for the show. It looks like a cross between Avatar (the blue people one) and Jurassic Park. I really, really hope it's good! With all these promos, you'd think it would be a show FOX expects to do well.
And on a totally unrelated note, I need to quit WoW or get active on it or find some project to do on it or something. I sit online for hours doing nothing at all. Finally tonight I wandered SMC looking for random RP, but got only a four-post scene before it ended. Grand total of my RP for the day. Le sigh.
Stupid Facebook. I started loading my LJ icons page before starting this post, to see what my max number of icons I could have is, but it's STILL not loading the page, still waiting on Facebook. Mumble.
Edit: Ha! While looking for dinosaur pictures, I found this. I had totally forgotten about it!
