A couple people asked me to let them know how this turned out, so here goes!

I wanted to cook this weekend. I've been so amazingly bad food-wise this week, I need to turn that around. (Outstanding RP = I want to get home as fast as I can. Fastest thing to eat? Fast food! I had it four nights in a row. Shoot me now.) I had been reading about making pulled pork in the slow cooker using nothing more than a can of Coke and a bottle of BBQ sauce. I had been recommended this recipe but it has... stuff in it. Multiple stuff! And the coke 'recipe' has only one. Coke! So the easy version it is.

I always set things up the night before, that way I can eat the slow cooker stuff as late lunch/early dinner. However, in this case, I wasn't sure about pouring the Coke in so far in advance. I had heard stories of Coke eating through nails in science class -- what if I woke up to nothing but pork shoulder goo? Ha ha. Anyway, I dared to put the Coke on the night before.

6:30. Woke up, stumbled into the kitchen, took it out of the fridge and turned it on, then went to bed for another hour's sleep (yay!).

As the day wore on, I noticed something odd. Whenever I make stuff in the slow cooker, it always, always smells great in the last few hours. I end up camping it, sniffing and drooling, waiting for it to finish. Today? No smells at all, except a very light "fatty pork" scent. Not a good sign.

The instructions had said once it cooks in the Coke, drain it (throw away the liquids/bones), then put the meat back in with the bottled sauce and cook on high for an hour. Warily I tasted it before putting it back in. Oddly it was good!

Good in a way, anyway. It had very little favor, but seemed more moist than mine usually come out. Adding a good deal of salt helped. After an hour cooking with the BBQ sauce it was better. (The sauce isn't great though, so...)

So I guess it came out fine? I'm not really sure what the point of the Coke was, if it lent no flavor. Did it really make it more moist? Or was that chance? Or me mis-remembering my previous attempts? No idea!

I guess I'd do this again sometime. Not too soon though, as it's a rather fatty meal. (Tummy isn't happy!)

PS: I finally, finally found crock pot liners for sale. WIN! No clean-up!

The coke helps to keep it moist, and maybe lend a little sweetness to it. If you're going to use coke with bbq sauce, you're better off making it from scratch.

Think it keeps it more moist than water/broth would? And nope, the BBQ sauce got added after the coke (and liquid fat!) were drained off.

That recommended recipe does sound good.I might have to try it, but I am lazy and will probably use storebought BBQ sauce.

I think the carbonation in the Coke is supposed to do something too, but not sure what...

The main thing the cola provides is acid (specifically, phosphoric acid). You can actually cook things purely in acid ceviche style ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceviche ), but I wouldn't recommend it with meat. I'd think mostly what the soda did is shorten the cooking time and help to tenderize the meat.

You could try making a pulled pork style dish out of a pork loin sometime if you would prefer a leaner dish. You can basically just stew it in whatever sauce you're using (dilute it with water or broth a bit to thin it for cooking and account for evaporation) and cook it until it starts to fall apart. Slicing it up into pork chop sort of cuts and grilling it is my personal favorite application though.

You know those stories about Coke eating nails? Use that theory on meat. As others have said, the acid in the Coke makes it tender, and adds a little bit of sweetness to it.

By the way, I'm pretty sure the Coke eating nails is an urban legend. XD

I used to work in a meat/seafood department, feel free to shoot questions at me about meat. =D I can typically answer them. Just don't ask me proper temps. I never could remember those.

Doesn't it? I might try it that way next time!

Ah, that's a good idea! Thanks! I really don't like how greasy this one came out.

Ack! Hee!

And will do, thanks! And no worries about temps, I have a handy sheet with that info on it!
