Grrr. All day yesterday I was going back and forth on seeing Avatar today. "But I hate crowds! But it'll be expensive! But but but!" This morning I woke up and decided to go for it. But, to try to avoid crowds, I wanted to catch the first viewing of the day. 9:30 AM in one theater, 9:45 AM in one down the road. I was up and ready, so I headed for the 9:30 one.

Got there at 9 AM. It was sold out. Grrr.

Sped off to the other theater. Got there at 9:15. Sold out.

Grumble. What a waste. All that stressing and debating and worrying back and forth if I should go, and I ended up not being able to.

Guess my record of not seeing movies in theaters will stand. Last time I went to one was 2007...

You should've seen Sherlock Holmes instead!

Unless you're going to buy a 3D TV when they start to come out (given your record, I doubt this will happen) I would still highly suggest you go see it in 3D and not wait fr the DVD to come out. It's still a good movie without the 3D but it's so much better with.

Yeah; unless you've got a truly epic home entertainment system, it's really something you should see on a giant screen in 3D, if you see it at all.

I saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a good movie, but I'm shocked it's still completely selling out nearly 2 weeks later!

Heh! I could have, but I really didn't want to sit around the lobby waiting for another showing...

*snickers!* Whatever would give you that idea! ;)

I'll probably try to catch it this coming week. Hopefully it'll still be in 3D by then (I think the 3D was for a limited time?).

My semi-plan is to try to see it this week after work. Hopefully all the kids are back in school and adults will be back at work! (I work early hours, so 'after work' for me is generally still working hours for other people.)

Yeah, I was rather surprised too. Part of the reason is the area I live in (Silicon Valley likely has the highest population of sci fi geeks around!), but still...

For my two cents, we went to see Avatar the other day in 3D. It was very pretty. Of course, it was a 300 million dollar budget pretty so no surprise there. Plot-wise it was pretty much Princess Mononoke, Pochahontas, and Fern Gully with an almost comical amount of tribal African stereotyping thrown into the mix. As for the 3D, I know a ton of people will tell you it's the only way to see this movie, but... I honestly felt pretty "meh" about it. It works, but I agree with Alex's sentiment -- the 3D forces your attention to whatever's going on at the foreground, so if you want to check out the background, or see what's going on elsewhere you really can't, it's blurry. You can see the (very) pretty scenery, but you can't really see it.

That said, the movie itself is entertaining, and gorgeous, and even manages to throw an original idea or two out there. Sorta. It's definitely worth seeing, and I'd definitely say it's one that's better seen in a theatre. I just don't think I'd put so much emphasis on the 3D bit, personally.

Avatar at the IMAX 3D cinema near me was still selling out two-three days in advance last week. I had to book on Wednesday to be able to see it at the 3PM showing on Saturday. Then when we arrived about 40 minutes before the show started, the theater was almost full already and we had to sit like three rows from the front, up close and person. :P

But it was still awesome. The 3D glasses gave me a headache but I honestly didn't notice until the movie finished.

Yeah, I'm not really expecting much from the plot, but so many people have commented on The Pretty! "and I'd definitely say it's one that's better seen in a theatre" I always end up kicking myself for not seeing those in the theater. Maybe this week! Maybe...

Wow... Yeah, it was the IMAX 3D version I had been trying to get into. Blah. Wonder when it will calm down? I heard on the news this morning it just passed one billion in ticket sales...
