thistlechaser: (Snape approves!)

I think I spent the whole movie going "Oooh, so THAT'S where that comes from!". Jokes and quotes I've been hearing for years, suddenly they all make sense!

It was quite a sweet, silly (in a good way) movie. I liked it from the very first moments all the way to the end. If I had to be critical of something, I'd say all the sword/knife wounds didn't have nearly enough blood, but this was a story in a kid's head, so that was fine and dandy.

It's really rather amazing. The movie was only an hour and a half, but they packed so much good stuff into that short amount of time. Really very impressive.

Lots of assorted other stuff:
- Cooking didn't happen today. I opened the pork to get the crock pot going, but something smelled odd. I'm not sure if the meat was going bad, but if it had a scent enough that I noticed it, I didn't want to risk it. "When in doubt, throw it out."

- The folks at [livejournal.com profile] teenycom are a strange bunch. Almost without fail, they want you to go to furaffinity.net to see samples of their work or to see their prices. The com description is "The promotion of fantasy and furry art commissions under $10 in price". Does the idea that non-furry people also visit the com never strike these people? I don't have a FA account. I don't want one. I sure as heck am not going to sign up for one just so I can buy something from you...

- As a retirement gift to my mother, I'm taking her on a cruise to Alaska (not until spring 2012, most likely). It's time like these that make me think that I should be on prozac or valium or something. It should be a good, happy, exciting thing, but everything about it makes me nervous and worried instead. I like my days to always be the same, I like having the same routine. I like sleeping in my own bed! I like not being eaten by sharks. (Luckily the water will probably be too cold for them.)

Right now I'm looking at the Princess cruiseline, though I'm far from dead set on it, it's just what my early googling tells me might be the best option. I don't even own a coat, I'm going to have to buy one. I'm paranoid about bringing bedbugs home (that's a serious issue, really!).

It'll likely be for 10 days. As I understand it, net access will have to be paid for and will be slow. How will I survive that long! (Though on the plus side, hopefully I'll get lots of reading time.)

The more research I do, the more it helps. I was really paranoid about food (I don't want to sit at a table with strangers and eat with them! I don't want to have to get dressed up!), but as I understand it, even room service is free. I'm not sure what my mother will be up for, but if worse comes to worst I can just hide in our room and eat there.

I wish I didn't worry about things so much, especially stupid things (10 days away from my markets in WoW! Arg! How many other sellers will move in during that time?!). Plus there's 10 days without RP, which is going to leave me twitching endlessly.

Stupid, stupid brain, let me enjoy things!

- I got my first reasonable offer for that damned magic rooster. 150K, but they wanted it listed on the neutral AH. That would be a loss of 22,500 gold to the AH fee, which would put me about even for what I bought it for. I had to say no. (The guy said he'd keep saving and make another offer in a month if I hadn't sold it by then.)

- All my alts are now at least 84 (6 85s, 2 84s, 2 mules who don't count), which means I'm all set for Halloween. Not sure how many of them I'll try for the mount on, but at least they can all go.

Level 85 try four the mount on.... what?
Halloween?
Oh, tell more!

I didn't want to say anything when you mentioned it, because nothing can spoil a movie like people hyping it up beforehand, but it's one of my all time top favorites! Glad you liked it. Somewhere, there's someone who doesn't. (Inconceivable!)

If you liked Princess Bride, also try Stardust. No creative connection, and it's not as much of a comedy, but it's a related genre, and there aren't many of those.

I'll second that. Stardust is awesome too!

At 84 you can enter the fight, if it matches Brewfest. The mount is one of the coolest in the game, in my opinion:

It acts both as a ground and flying mount.

I will third the Stardust. But there are three movies with that name (that I know of). Make sure you get the one with Claire Danes & Robert De Niro!

Claire Danes is in it? Even more reason to see it! She's quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses.

Yes! And it's such a good movie. I can't imagine you'd regret watching it. I need to get my hands on the book and see if it's any good though.

Huh! I think we're going in May, but our date is up in the air still. Wouldn't it be funny if we ended up on the same ship at the same time!

June 22 out of San Francisco on the Sea Princess - come join us!

From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Same, Sea Princess out of San Francisco, but I think we're doing the second date in May (22nd? I lost my tabs when I rebooted). For some reason the second date in May is like $200 cheaper per person than the first date.

Do you book directly through Princess? Or is going through an agency better? I've never booked one before.

Date: 2011-10-09 04:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] elo-sf.livejournal.com
I always book through princess; allegedly you can save some money through TA's if you know who to ask, but I prefer the control if there is a price drop you can call princess directly, etc.

We did the Crown Princess from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean and it was great.

I usually buy like 100 minutes and you get a bonus of like 20 and you can optimize some specials to get like 150-180 minutes out of it. Plus when in shore in the US/Alaska there will likely be cheaper wifi/cell. Also iPads seem to be not very friendly with the shipboard satellite system according to some reports.

Date: 2011-10-09 04:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yeah, I'd be bringing my iPad (it's my ereader, even if I can't get good net access). It's so slow to type on, it really wouldn't be worth it. I'll try to load it up with stuff before I go and hopefully that will hold me.

Hmm, and I need a better carrying bag for it too, if I'll be bringing it around with me on the ship.

At least some species of sharks show signs of being endothermic. Regardless, they are not restricted to warm waters, they're found all over, including around Alaska! :D

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. :P

Hubby has a t-shirt with quotes from Princess Bride on it, and without fail, if he wears it people stop him to compliment it and quote swathes of the movie back and forth. XD

The cruise sounds like fun! I want to do that sometime too. We would be sailing out of Seattle though.

The Princess Bride is also a fun book.

I think Seattle is the much more popular port. We have only one choice (10 days) for sailing out of San Fran.

Ooh, is it? I'll have to look for it!

Yep, sharks can live in cold water. Although I would think that if something went wrong it'd be more likely that you'd freeze to death before the sharks ever got around to you (plus I would imagine certain whale species would get there first?) so yay? I guess... o.O

10 days away from my markets in WoW! Arg! How many other sellers will move in during that time?!

I think of it as a nice way to instill fresh fear into those who haven't been initiated to the Thistle markets. I mean, I'm sure many of the people you have crushed before know to stay away from you, but there are some who don't know any better! This is a good time to let them know :P

As for Princess Bride, while attempting to remain as spoiler free as possible: I think how he handled the poison cups was the best part for me! Thinking outside the box there!

I'd much much rather freeze to death than be eaten by a shark or a whale!

I went to the Cliffs of Insanity (actually the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland) on my honeymoon. It was awesome. ^^

The Princess Bride is a graet movie. I didn't really appreciate it the first time I watched it, but I've loved it on subsequent viewings. I pick up on something new each time I watch it!

I'd never been on a cruise til 6 months before I got married (that cruise was actually the impetus that pushed my wife into wanting to get married - having to stay in separate bedrooms and whatnot really pissed her off).

On food, most cruise ships have a few dining options. Fancy dining room (where people dress up, usually formal wear one night but business casual every other) which has a menu of a few choices (usually tasty ones) and you can basically ask for however much you like (though 1 portion is a bit much for me), then they have an informal dining area that's open most of the day, usually buffet-style serving, and a few private restaurant-places that you pay extra for. The formal and informal are included in your original ticket-price and are usually all-you-can-eat. And yea, room service is free, so if you don't want to dress up but want the food from the fancy then they'll bring it to you.

For what its worth, we went Royal Caribbean. Everything was clean, the service personnel were helpful (with the exception of my father-in-law fighting with them about the bottle of bourbon he brought with him. That was confiscated). The ship & cabins were roomy enough that I never felt cramped or claustrophobic. The ships are usually big enough that even with hundreds of people on board, you're not likely to run into many. These ships are HUGE. Arcade on one floor, dining on 3 floors, pools on 2 floors, etc. If you've heard anyone describe one as a floating vacation resort, I'd have to counter that I think cruise ships are bigger.

Personally when I travel, I like to see and do things. Being on a ship like that was rather boring (Oh joy, another day of seeing nothing but water). You'll basically be without TV or internet (I have 50mb/s at home. dialup speeds like a cruise ship's basically mean no internet), excepting what you bring on personal electronics. I read a lot. Sat in the hot tub some, swam a little.

My wife and I discussed taking a cruise to Alaska, until we found this. The funny part is her parents want to go (they're in their 70s) and refuse to believe that they may not be in the kind of shape that trip will require.

Woo, thanks for the information! I'm sure my mother will want to go to some of the nicer dinners, but I warned her in advance she can go on her own to anything we need to dress up for. I'll happily eat in my room or some poolside hotdog shack thingie.

No TV and no Internet is going to suck so badly. I'm certain my iPad won't be able to hold enough for 10 days. (Though maybe I'll be able to reread the Fire and Ice series in that time...)

Are you using Stanza for iPad/iPhone as your eReader? If so I can hook you up to my ebook library of about 900 books. In particular I recommend the 2 books by Patrick Rothfuss and the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Great cruise reading. Both are in my library. If you want access, let me know and...um...hm. Is there a PM system on livejournal? if not, i'll find a way to get the URL to you (very easy to add a library in Stanza - just a URL and a few other options).

I use a kindle app. I actually have a file of 10,000 ebooks, sometimes I think it's just about every ebook that exists. Worst thing is someone organized the file by the author's first name...

Thanks for the recommendations though (and the offcer!). I did try the first Dresden Files book, but I hadn't liked it. I'll look into Rothfuss though!

I'll add my vote for Stardust, it was really an excellent movie. I'll also add in my votes for Labyrinth, Legend, The Dark Crystal, Willow and Pan's Labyrinth, if you haven't seen them. :)

I grew up watching Princess Bride, I've seen it probably hundreds of times by now. I'm always so happy to hear about someone seeing it and enjoying it.

Edit: I was going to say this but forgot - I totally know how you feel by being stressed out/worried by something that is totally going to be fun. I get anxious about big trips, even if it's something I've wanted to go to/do foreeeever. Staying organized is the best advice that I can offer you. I make a master list and keep it handy, that way, when I feel like I'm getting overwhelmed, I sit down and go through and reassure myself I've got what I need, taken care of. It sounds like it's going to be amazing fun, though, I am quite envious. :)
