Yeah, I read that as well. I never watched more than a couple eps of the Sex in the City show, and none of the movies, and I enjoyed this series just fine. I think SitC had Carrie doing a voiceover, too? As far as I can recall, I think her voice is a good match for the grown up Carrie, but an actual fan of the original show would be a better judge of that.
It seems like a fine stand-alone show, though I think it has a lot of parallels as well. (In last night's ep, Carrie and her two friends sat around and talked about sex -- it struck me as a very SitC sort of scene.)
