My stomach is such that, if I start feeling queasy, I stay queasy for hours. Maybe yours is the same?

Try the water aerobics again, but maybe an hour beforehand try eating something bready. I always found a slice of bread or half a bagel or whatever would help soak up the acid in my gut. I used to get nauseous when we drove on twisty roads (of which there are many here), and that bit of bread helped a lot.

That said, I'm pretty sure your gut started feeling bad due to the fumes.
