I've loved JCS ever since I saw it on PBS a couple of years ago. I'm not a music person, I own maybe three CDs total, but the JCS soundtrack is one of them. It's the only one I listen to on a regular basis.

While the music/singers in it are wonderful (amazing to the point of making me shiver at the emotion in their voices), the story is even better:

Jesus, golden man, beloved by all. Judas, dark, ugly, not much liked. Judas is a good friend to Jesus, but Jesus is... flippant with the friendship. After all, Jesus has followers, women hanging off him, anyone would love to call him 'friend'. Jesus gets full of himself. Things start going wrong. Judas tries to tell him, tries to help him. Jesus brushes him off. Accuses Judas of being jealous. Things get worse. Judas admits his love for Jesus. Jesus doesn't need the love, and his head is too full of other things.

Judas, in an effort to stop the madness, to help Jesus turns to the enemies. All this has gone too far, the worship, the madness. If he can stop the movement, he can save his friend: the man he loves, the man he respects. Jesus ends up getting arrested and the mob turns on him (as mobs do: love you one moment, chant for your death the next). Judas, lost, kills himself. Jesus is killed. The mob falls into line.

That story in and of itself almost seems to be fan-written. Darkness, angst, man-man love... if the two had ended up in bed together at some point it really would have been perfect slash fanfic.

I see such ties between JCS and HP. If You Are Prepared was the catalyst for much of this comparison. What is Harry Potter (the character) if not a golden boy? Everyone loves him. He can do no wrong. He does indeed have followers. Fans. (On a related note, I'm surprised he doesn't get tons of gifts from random people on Christmas.) I haven't even read the ending to IYAP yet, but I strongly suspect I know what'll happen. (My guess: Harry is going to be killed, and Snape will have to let it happen. Snape, who is already so in love with him. Snape, who Harry trusts. Snape will have to betray Harry to save everyone else. End cut.) Snape seems made for the role of Judas-- No, that's not exactly right. Not that he's made for it, he already is it. I don't think he'd betray Dumbledore or the "side of good" (which is nothing like a side of fries), but I think he would very much betray one person, even someone he loves, to save everyone else. That will hurt him so so much, but as the reader that pain will be so... wonderful? Beautiful?

Lyrics clips.

Judas, to Jesus:
I remember when this whole thing began
No talk of God then, we called you a man
And believe me
My admiration for you hasn't died
But every word you say today
Gets twisted 'round some other way

Mary:
Try not to get worried
Try not to turn on to
Problems that upset you
(oh) Don't you know
Everything's alright
Yes everything's fine
And we want you to sleep well tonight
Let the world turn without you tonight

Jesus, changing his mind about this whole dying thing:
I only want to say
If there is a way
Take this cup away from me
For I don't want to taste its poison
Feel it burn me,
I have changed I'm not as sure
As when we started
Then I was inspired
Now I'm sad and tired

I could quote a lot more in, but these three hopefully make my point. Substitute Snape for Judas, Harry for Jesus, and "the crowd"/average citizens in the HP world for Mary. It really fits... though upon rereading this, I could very well be mixing fanworks and canon in my mind again. Well, if I am, so be it. It's either near the point or already at where I'm liking fanworks better anyway. (Sacrilege, I know!)
