thistlechaser: (Cat shrimp (hungry now?))

Another day, another two pounds lost. While I'm happy (so happy), I know it's not real weight loss (or at least not as much as the scale says). It has to be still mostly water weight. Though heck, I'm 100000% fine with all 10-15 pounds I need to lose being water weight!

I did something I never thought I'd ever do again: I bought rice cakes. I dieted endlessly as a kid and as a teen, and one of the things my mother always bought me was rice cakes. She told me they were good, but I hated them more than words can say. Today? I'm looking to get as much food I can for as few calories possible, so I bought some. While they're in no way, shape, or form good, they're only 35 calories for each one and can easily take the place of bread in a meal.

Very sadly, I had to throw out food from my freezer. It's stuff I'll never be able to eat again, and I needed to make room for low cal stuff. I hate wasting food, but if I break my diet for something, it won't be for frozen chicken nuggets, pressed chicken patties, and year-old frozen chicken wings. I didn't throw out the ice cream. Ironically I bought it for the first time in years last week, and never even had any before learning about the weight loss requirement. I'm probably going to bring it to work for others to eat, but at the moment I can't part with it. (And, while this is bad thinking, if this weight loss continues, I maybe could have one before giving the rest away.)

Once a month at work we get unlimited free donuts, bagels, and other baked goods. Totally unlimited, you could eat three dozen donuts if you wanted. It's a problem day for me, and it was today, so I had planned to work from home. That turned out for the best, because I woke up at 2:30 AM with the worst headache ever. I tried to sleep more (after ripping the CPAP mask off of my head), but it was pointless. I sat in the dark for a while, and eventually got up and googled. First night using the machine and worst headache in my life when I never usually get them couldn't be coincidence. Looks like maybe I had the straps too tight. Hopefully that's the case and I'll get no headache tonight.

I increased my calories a little today. (Turns out 1,100 was too low for my weight and goal.) I bought beef jerky after not liking it twice before, and I finally found a brand I actually liked. Slim Jim. (I've never had one of their sticks, and I never heard good things about them, so I was surprised I liked this jerky. Actual jerky, not the pressed meat stick things.) Jerky is high protein and low cal. I had a about a serving of it (hard to measure exactly), 90 calories. The only other snack I had today was six strawberries (So sweet and strawberry-y!). I might have more strawberries later tonight.

Last thing: I bought a rotisserie chicken since they were on sale today. Tomorrow or Sunday I'm going to make broth/stock with whatever remains at the time. It's been a long time since I last did that, and the broth would be a good snack. ("Snack".)

All in all, today was much better than yesterday. I wasn't OH MY GOD SO HUNGRY STARVING MUST HAVE FOOD NOW-level hungry. I did have cravings though, which are way more annoying than hunger.

You can make good jerky cheaper than you can get it in a store. Plus lower calories and less salt.

If you go to the butcher and get them to put a roast into the slicer, you can then cut the slices into strips. Soak in worcestershire or something else to marinate, then put on a wire rack. Put the wire rack on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil. Put in the oven at low heat with the door slightly ajar.

Oh that's interesting! I never thought of making it myself before. Thanks for the info!

Homemade jerky is awesome, but it does take a bit of time. We usually make a big batch couple times a year, and keep it in the freezer. We have a dehydrator though. I have not tried to do it using an oven.

Keep at it! I hate throwing out food too, but it is for a good cause.

if you like tea, try to get your hands on stinging-nettle tea. it helps loosing excessive water and with dieting in general, it is said.

Ah yes, hunger. The incessant hunger.
I have a so-called "normal" metabolism; the calories in/calories out deal actually works for me. But I'm always hungry. Doesn't matter how much or little I eat. That only affects my weight fluctuation, not my sense of hunger.

Re: the rice cakes--a lot of people have "NEVER AGAIN" boundaries when it comes to food issues, and, sure, we break them, it happens, but you're doing this whole thing in a way you wouldn't usually try to do for long term because of someone else's requirements, so, I agree it's extraordinary times and measures and such and you're doing what you gotta. *hugs* *hopes long-winded answer sounded positive in the way it was meant to*

Wow, you're doing great! :)

I second the comment about an infusion made from stinging nettle (it even tastes good, sort of minty). If you like parsley, that helps as a mild diruetic too.

How do you like your dehydrator? I've been thinking of getting one for kale chips!

You're the BOMB.

For ice cream cravings, I recommend arctic zero - http://www.arcticzero.com/ - 150 kcal for the entire pint, so a scoop is... I don't know what a scoop is because I always eat the entire pint.

Now I'ma be real here - it does NOT taste like ice cream, and the texture is off as well, but if you let it sit for a bit before you spoon into it, it's a reasonable enough approximation to make your brain THINK you had ice cream (or at least it is for me).

I've had all the flavors except the seasonal, and my favorites are the chocolate peanut butter and the mint chocolate. Again, they DO NOT taste just like ice cream, but they're kind of like a frozen protein smoothie, and I know my girl with the bariatric surgery eats a boatload of whey protein smoothies. So! A thing to try.

Also! Because you were talking about peanut/cookie butter!

I use this: http://www.bellplantation.com/

They've started carrying it in grocery stores here, so I don't even have to order it online anymore. Much like arctic zero, it doesn't taste like regular peanut butter or have the same texture - all the fat has been centrifuge'd out, so you have to rehydrate it, and it's not as rich or creamy as peanut butter with fat (because duh). But again like AZ, if you want a low calorie snack and are thinking DAMN I WANT PEANUT BUTTER AND CRACKERS BUT I CANNOT EAT A LOT OF PEANUT BUTTER BECAUSE IT HAS SO MANY CALORIES, PB2 is good for that fix. Also good for dipping veggies in to get the veggies down (if you end up liking the PB2 itself). Also good for mixing with plain or chocolate yogurt (if you like yogurt).

Also it is dried, so if you try it and hate it I will totally buy it from you and pay for shipping. I go through a lot of it.

It's kind of expensive and you don't get much in a bag, so I can see the value of making it yourself.

I think my diet is going well, but I really can't explain this amount of loss other than water weight. (But how long does it take to get rid of that?)

So all in all, I'm confused but happy.

Exactly. Better in the trash than in me! Especially since it wasn't exactly quality stuff anyway.

Oh thank you! I'm not a tea person, but I'm certainly willing to make exceptions for something like that.

If this weigh loss is real and not all water, I have to say I must have a good metabolism. A pound is 3,500 calories, but I cannot possibly be eating 7,000 fewer calories per day!

Hunger so totally sucks though, yeah.

Yes, that came out sounding positive. :)

They're, well, not good, but not the most awful thing either. So long as you eat them straight out of the package. They get stale VERY fast (I had one on my plate for three hours before eating it, and it got stale in that time.) Once they lose their crunch, they're just not worth eating.

Thanks!

Wow! 150 calories for a WHOLE PINT of semi-ice cream sounds great! Next time I go shopping, I'll look for it. :D

Oh! I heard of PB2! At the moment I'm going to stick with the regular stuff though. Peanut butter is my one true love (especially in ice cream -- my mouth is watering thinking about this). But! If it gets to the point where I need to lose faster, I'll look into it. Sprouts stores around here carry it, I've seen it there.

Thanks! <3

Yes, those first big losses are water weight mixed with shocking the system. It will slow down naturally but the big drop at first is certainly awesome!

I hope my system stays shocked for a good, long time! (Or at least two months...) :P

We got a cheaper plastic one. It is slow and makes a loud hum while working...basically a load of beef jerky or sliced apples means 12 hours of continuous humming in the kitchen. It is fine for the few times a year we use it, but I would probably not buy another one. If you plan on using a dehydrator often, shop around for one that works faster with less noise!

I think you are doing great!

Where the heck do you work that offers unlimited treats once a month? That's unreal O_O;

Ooh chicken broth! My dad used to make bouillon broth a lot when I was a kid, and he would just drink that without anything. I got into it too, and I still think of it as a nice snack when I have a craving for something savory.

Isn't it crazy? I loved it, when I could take advantage of it.

That's what I'm hoping to do with the broth, too. It's cooking now and smells so good, but it's way too early to try it yet.

And thanks! <3

Cravings suck, but they're also a good sign in a perverse way--it's your body complaining it's not getting things it's used to getting, and if you're craving something sugary, overly processed, etc, then it's probably good you're not getting it. :P

Hang in there. I know how rough it is. *hug*

Thanks!

Hunger and cravings are interesting (if unpleasant to experience). Like you said, it's interesting to hear what my body thinks is so important to have NOW NOW NOW.

Good luck with it all.

Add some veggies to the broth when you make it, hardly any calories in carrots, celery and onion etc. and so much more filling.
