University of East Palo Alto

In Passing is a keen site. The chick who runs it posts snips of conversations she overhears daily. Today's made me giggle a lot:

"Oh, University Ave/East Palo Alto. I thought you said 'University of East Palo Alto.'"
*pause*
"It's not unreasonable. And I can hardly hear you, so I'm gonna go... Look, would you stop it? I wasn't insulting anyone. You were laughing, you apologize to East Palo Alto."

If you're not from this area, you'll probably miss the humor. EPA is a scary place. To quote a comment left about that overheard conversation:

"That's kind of like saying University of Compton, or University of South Side Chicago, or... you get the idea."

This is extra amusing because I'm actually headed to Palo Alto today with an out-of-town friend in tow. I'll have to see if I can find a suitable building to point to and announce, "And there are the hallowed halls of the University of East Palo Alto."
