Snapey goodness! (By Artema.) He looks a little young, but his eyes are nice. (And young's not necessarily bad.)

I need to update my HP Oekaki section. I keep finding good stuff.

------------

In happy news, my story got people talking about one of my favorite characters, Peter. This one, from Gina, started it:

Anyway, any fic where Pettigrew gets what's coming to him is A-OK in my book. I love the idea of Voldemort using him as a means of experimenting with a new spell. Great job. :-)

And so I wrote

Mine:

I know my opinion isn't the most common (or liked) one out there, but I personally don't think that Peter deserves as much abuse as he gets. How many people, when the most evil person comes face-to-face with them, would be able to tell that evil person no? How many people could honestly say that they'd rather die than betray their friends? Remember, honestly.

It'd be all noble and such to die before betraying your friends, but real people tend not to be that strong. And from what we know of him from the books, Peter wasn't one of the strongest people around to begin with.

I do agree that he's done some darned bad things, and yes, he should have to be held accountable for them, but I understand his motives. He's a flawed, weak man who was put in a bad position, picked the selfish (if understandable) choice, and is now in a worse position.

He's done a lot of bad things, but I don't hold the hatred of him that a lot of folks do. I feel sorry for the guy, and I love him to death as a character. I can't wait to see what happens with him in the next books.

Lady Feylene's:

As head of the Society for the Ethical Treatment of Peter Pettigrew, I
can tell you your opinion is shared. There are thirty something of us,
so far, and we agree that Peter does not deserve blind hatred.

Peter is a very real character. And he does feel guilt and pain over
what he's done. As is *very* well demonstrated in your wonderful fic.
When faced with the option of doing something that one can easily
distance oneself from, and dying a horrible death, most people would
choose option A. Peter didn't actually kill Lily and James, wasn't even
there when it happened. He could have easily, mentally distances himself
from it all. It wasn't real to him. Everyone makes mistakes. And
everyone only wants forgiveness. But no one can ever forgive poor Peter.
(Talking from character POV) Anyway, it was a beautiful piece of work
and I applaud you on it.

Peter and Filch, two of my three favorite characters. They're very different, but they have a lot in common as well. Both adults, when all the main characters in the books are kids. Both are very weak, very flawed, very bottom-rung-on-the-social-ladder. However, both are in the positions they're in because of circumstances out of their control. I feel so bad for both of them. For Filch I wish (human) love and a better life, but for Peter perhaps the best thing I can wish him is a painless death. He is a doomed, hopeless character. The world at large won't forgive him. Where could he go... other than Hogwarts. Oh, hee, now there's a thought. There's an ex-Death Eater there, could Peter maybe make enough amends and gain enough trust back to earn a place there as well? I guess I doubt it, but... maybe. Who knows. Maybe she'll make him change and grow enough to earn that. That'd make me happy. :)
