Barrow, Alaska

thistlechaserI want to move to Barrow, Alaska. There's a webcam at a research station up there, and I've watched it for going on two years now.

The sun finally set up there; it's 3:40 local time and it's pitch black out. How cool is that?
For the last many months, I could look at their picture and it was sunny. Land of the midnight sun? Land of the 3 AM sun, land of the 11 PM sun... yes, indeedy.
The one and only thing that's stopping me from moving to somewhere in or near Barrow is the complete and utter lack of jobs. Unless you're a government researcher or a polar bear hunter, there's really nothing up there to do job-wise. Other places in Alaska are a little different, but not enough. I've looked through job listings, and would likely get stuck doing customer service in a store (blech blech blech blech) if I went up there. I really want to move to Alaska, but I don't want to do face-to-face customer service.
I've pondered taking some courses in meteorology so I'd be better able to maybe do government/research work, but I bet there are lots of people who would be a whole lot more qualified than me looking for such positions.
The whole idea of moving there seriously distresses my mother. Me moving across the country was bad enough, but to the furthest, smallest, least populated part of Alaska? She twitches.
What I really need to do is take a vacation up there. (Yes, I've never been there before, but then I moved where I am now without having been here before, too.) Problem is, all my vacation time keeps getting used for (unwilling on my part) family visits. Guess for now I'll just keep watching the cam and dream.
