Most people don't know this, but witches and wizards have not always used broomsticks to fly upon. There had been lots of trial and error before that familiar object was agreed to.
First cauldrons were tried (killing two birds with one stone), but too many "on the pot" jokes were made.
Flying rugs were tried and dismissed, though word got out and other lands adapted that idea.
Making children into flying objects was attempted, but the single and the childless protested. People with children protested, too.
Finally they returned to the dual-use idea, and brooms became the accepted object.
