I've had Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind downloaded for a while now, but was saving it until I was in the mood for a movie. I've had some good experiences with Miyazaki/Ghibli stuff before (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, The Cat Returns) and some less good ones (My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies), and unfortunately this has to go very firmly into the "less good" experience category. I'd really almost call it bad...

The animation was very nice, as were the voices. The world they invented for the movie was creative and enjoyable, but the plot... gah. If they had set out to be as heavy-handed as possible, they could not have made it more than it already was. "Humans are destroying the Earth! War is bad! War will destroy us all! Pollution is bad! Hurting the Earth is bad!" Yes, yes. They didn't use a 2x4 to beat those messages into us, they used a skyscraper.

The three movies I didn't like were from the 80s, and the three I did like were from mid-1990 forward, so let's hope this is the trend and they'll continue to be better as time goes on.

This could have been an enjoyable movie if I didn't come away from it feeling covered in bruises from having the messages beaten into me. It almost makes me want to go out and clear-cut a forest or pollute a stream or something...
