Zzzz (RL, Animal Crossing, SG:A)
Jan. 9th, 2006 08:45 am*RL: As usual for a Sunday night, I slept poorly last night. I did have an amusing dream though! PokeMUSH LARP. Ha ha. Grayson, me, and some random male person (a joker-type, never serious, and not a Rocket). The random guy, thinking I (Sly) was just some boy, put his hand on the back of my neck while he was talking to Grayson and I. Of course that's just not something you'd want to do to him, so I met Grayson's eyes and murmured 'ping, one hundred percent'. And meeting Grayson's eyes while pinging wasn't smart (though challenge hadn't been the point, more like asking for help), so he replied back in an undertone 'pinging fifty percent'. I blinked, looked away, and repeated 100%. The random guy was rather confused by all this (OOCly, ICly he was ignoring the whispers) and kept his hand in place. Grayson went down to pinging 20% (basically just alert because I was still at 100%) and the random guy kept his hand there, so I jumped at Random, knocking him down, with one hand on the side of his neck and the other on his throat. Since this was a LARP I couldn't actually choke him, so I kept repeating 'Choking, choking, choking you...'. Poor fellow just never did get it, so we had to have an OOC break so Grayson's player could explain it. (RL years had passed since we all last RPed, so the random guy's character should have known what was going on even though the RL player hadn't. It was very cute, Grayson's player (who was male, ha ha) hit Random's player upside the back of the head in a playful/joking way.)
It's amusing that LARP in my dream worked no better for me than RL LARP. I just can't get into RP if I'm (me, my actual body) is doing the stuff. Still, the whole thing just really amused me. :)
* Animal Crossing: I brought my game in to work to try to use the wifi connection here, but that failed. Apparently there's some sort of security setting the game doesn't like. Bah.
All in all, I guess I like the game. I don't love it, and I don't like a few things in it (mostly that an internet connection is needed to trade). It's basically the exact same game as the Gamecube version, with a few extra details added. More fish to catch, yet fishing is exactly the same. More items to buy, yet the process at Nook's remains the same.
The two biggest problems I have with the game are:
1) I don't like any of the animals in my village. Not one of them. All the males are jocks and all the females are bitches... except (ironically) one female dog. She apparently sleeps around with everyone. This is the second morning she's told me she got a "groin pull" overnight. Yesterday morning Curly (male pig) also had a groin pull, so I figure she was with him then. No one else has admitted to having a groin pull this morning, so I don't yet know who she slept with last night. I really, really wanted Chief in my village. He was my favorite when I played on the GC.
2) The whole wireless thing. I could just ignore the wireless aspect if trading worked as it did in the old game (you got a code from a friend, then could turn that code in for the item). Since you can't trade across games unless you can travel to the new town yourself, and since I cannot do that, I feel very cut off. The original game was great because you could interact with other people to some extent, and now I can't do even that amount. I'll be stuck with nothing but oranges growing in my town until one of my worthless animals gives me something foreign. (Maybe if I slept with that dog she might give me a foreign fruit for my efforts!)
The things I like about the game are seriously minor: You can buy hats, glasses, wigs, etc and they show on your character. You can wave to your neighbors and that makes them happy. Um... that's about it, really. It's basically the old game, which on one hand means I like it, but on the other hand means I know it and it's boring. I think my enjoyment of the game might go up if I had villagers I actually cared about. (I don't want to destroy my town and start over because I've already paid my mortgage once and Nook upgraded once.)
So was it worth buying? If I had just purchased the game, I'd not be unhappy. But was it worth buying the DS as well as the game? Not really. The DS is pretty darned cool, but now it's going to go into my pile of systems that I do nothing but play one game on. GB, GBC, GBA... at least the DS is the same size/shape so it'll blend into the pile?
* Stargate Atlantis: The only thing that kept me sane through my nine hours of seeking a party yesterday on FFXI was that Tivo had recorded ten hours of SGA. And I watched them all, one after another. :) There was actually an ep that I hadn't seen all of yet, so I even got some new material! But even as reruns, they're such fun to watch. And man, the themesong? Love it so much.
I've been reading so much SGA fanfic lately. (I actually have to go hunting down more rec pages. I've read almost all of the ones on Isis'!) Such an enjoyable fandom. :)
