thistlechaser: (Cat shrimp (hungry now?))
I love reading food blogs. Reviews of new foods, reviews of restaurants in cities I'll never go to (two of my favorite blogs are reviews of restaurants in Indianapolis), reviews of fast food, food from Target, anything and everything food-related! The downside to this is that it often makes me hungry and makes me buy things I wouldn't otherwise. (Food companies know this and send the bloggers free samples of new things so they'll write (positive) reviews of it.)

Lately a couple blogs have reviewed new potato chip flavors, so when I saw them in the store, I had a WANT reaction.

The first was Ruffles Loaded Bacon & Cheddar Potato Skins Chips:

If I hadn't read about it in so many blogs, I would have never looked twice at the bag. A potato skin flavored potato chip? c.c And that's just what it was. It was a more potato-y tasting chip, with a bit of a tang to it (sour cheese, I assume). No taste of cheese or bacon or anything else. They weren't bad, but they were worse than a plain potato chip would be.

The second one I might have given a second look to, and perhaps would have bought a bag out of curiosity: Lay's Classic BLT potato chips.

When a food blog gives something a less than glowing review, you know it must be bad. They generally all want free stuff, and so generally say only good things. None of the reviews I saw said anything bad about these chips, but none said much good. "Curious" and "unique" were the two most common thing I saw. Both of those apply. Somehow these chips taste like toast and tomatoes. How in the world do you make potato chips taste like toasted bread? Somehow they do it. Bacon? Only in the smell, no flavor at all. Lettuce? No flavor or smell of it (probably for the best). Mostly it's just tomato and toast. Not very good at all.

Unfortunately I bought two (small) bags of the BLT kind. I'm going to take the second one in to work tomorrow and leave it in the kitchen. I'm sure someone will be willing to eat it for free.

Blame [livejournal.com profile] prettyredeyes for two posts in one night. :P I was editing a photo for a reply to her comment, and came upon other photos I had taken to LJ post.

The first needs a bit of backstory: I almost never had Easter candy when I was growing up. My father had problems and he canceled holidays, vacations, and birthdays as punishment for the most minor of things. Didn't clean your room? Trip to Disney World is off. Left your shoes in the hallway? Christmas is canceled this year. One Easter he filled his car trunk with chocolate for my sister and I -- we were dying for it, having so rarely had Easter candy in the past. Then we did something minor wrong, so he gave it all away to neighborhood kids instead.

So, since growing up, I buy a piece or two of Easter candy for myself now. One year I bought one of those big baskets with toys and candy in it. It may have been a rip-off for the price, but I had never had one before and it was such a wonderful thing. This year I went to the store a few days before Easter (missing the discount a couple days later, I know). I scanned the shelf to see what I wanted, then I saw it. Or rather, what it was holding...

Is that why you look so sly, Miss Rabbit? Because of what you're holding? (I know that's supposed to be an egg, but the pink band on top makes it look like something totally different...)

It was very, very yummy. It's surprising how good that cheap candy can taste.

Photo #2 is less fun. Now and then I spot a small bug in my apartment. They're always crawling on a wall, and they're tiny (smaller than the point of a pencil). They look like a little black dot. They move really slowly, just crawling along. Watching one, I realized my camera takes good pictures of tiny things, and it saves it as such a large file that it gets great details even on little things. So I took a picture of the bug. Now I wish I hadn't.

What in the world kind of bug is that?! D: Now I'll never see it as a little black dot! I worried it was a tick (even so small), but it doesn't seem to match the images on Google. At least it seems harmless...
