thistlechaser: (Cat shrimp (hungry now?))

A couple people asked me to let them know how this turned out, so here goes!

I wanted to cook this weekend. I've been so amazingly bad food-wise this week, I need to turn that around. (Outstanding RP = I want to get home as fast as I can. Fastest thing to eat? Fast food! I had it four nights in a row. Shoot me now.) I had been reading about making pulled pork in the slow cooker using nothing more than a can of Coke and a bottle of BBQ sauce. I had been recommended this recipe but it has... stuff in it. Multiple stuff! And the coke 'recipe' has only one. Coke! So the easy version it is.

I always set things up the night before, that way I can eat the slow cooker stuff as late lunch/early dinner. However, in this case, I wasn't sure about pouring the Coke in so far in advance. I had heard stories of Coke eating through nails in science class -- what if I woke up to nothing but pork shoulder goo? Ha ha. Anyway, I dared to put the Coke on the night before.

6:30. Woke up, stumbled into the kitchen, took it out of the fridge and turned it on, then went to bed for another hour's sleep (yay!).

As the day wore on, I noticed something odd. Whenever I make stuff in the slow cooker, it always, always smells great in the last few hours. I end up camping it, sniffing and drooling, waiting for it to finish. Today? No smells at all, except a very light "fatty pork" scent. Not a good sign.

The instructions had said once it cooks in the Coke, drain it (throw away the liquids/bones), then put the meat back in with the bottled sauce and cook on high for an hour. Warily I tasted it before putting it back in. Oddly it was good!

Good in a way, anyway. It had very little favor, but seemed more moist than mine usually come out. Adding a good deal of salt helped. After an hour cooking with the BBQ sauce it was better. (The sauce isn't great though, so...)

So I guess it came out fine? I'm not really sure what the point of the Coke was, if it lent no flavor. Did it really make it more moist? Or was that chance? Or me mis-remembering my previous attempts? No idea!

I guess I'd do this again sometime. Not too soon though, as it's a rather fatty meal. (Tummy isn't happy!)

PS: I finally, finally found crock pot liners for sale. WIN! No clean-up!
