SWF seeks anime series...
Nov. 4th, 2003 10:06 pmOkay, folks! I need heeeeeellllllp! I'm out of things to watch. I loved, loved, loved Get Backers, but there are only two eps left and I can't watch them yet. That was my favorite series, but I also liked Juuni Kokki (also known as 'The 12 Kingdoms' and 'Shadow of the Moon, Sea of Shadow').
They're two pretty different series, so I'm not sure how helpful that information will be.
(Edited to add: I also loved Escaflowne.)
I'd like the next series I watch to have the following things:
Good-looking guys, though not those kind who look like girls (bish-whatevers). I like my men to look like men, thanks. :)
Set in the RL world is fine, as is set in a fantasy world. Horror, scifi, fantasy are all cool types for it to be.
An interesting storyline(s) and good characterization are a must.
I like subtitles better than dubbing, but I'll watch either.
I'm not sure if this is an odd thing for someone who watches anime to have an opinion on, but I like the newer art styles. (I tried watching this series, but the art got to me. Old style.)
Anyone know of anything that would fit that? Thanks in advance!

Date: 2003-11-05 02:59 am (UTC)You could also try 'Gensomaden Saiyuki' (or just Saiyuki). Ever head of Journey To The West? That chinese novel? This is a slightly altered version. Expect fantasy, action and humor. Not so much boy-lovin', but good all around, nonetheless.
If you're into younger boys (much, much younger, think 12 or so), you can always try 'Hikaru no Go'. It's about a boy who's possessed by the spirit of a Go (Japanese board game) player. Strangely enough, for a series about a board game, it is very intriguing. And lots of fangirls will attest to the fact that Akira Touya is a heartthrob.
Hope that helps!

Date: 2003-11-05 08:15 am (UTC)Cowboy Bebop is a fun little series, about a group of space bounty hunters. It's quite popular, and has great music - by the same person who did the Escaflowne music, but you'd only know by quality level, it's a different style.
Suggestion 3: Martian Successor Nadeshiko. This is mostly a comedy series, a parody of the mulitude of Anime sci-fi shows. (Robotech, Gundam, that kind of thing.) It's not a broad farce, and should still work even with limited exposure to the original genre - it's more like Galaxy Quest => Star Trek than, say, Scary Movie. It's a lot of fun!

Date: 2003-11-05 09:01 am (UTC)Ah, Utena! I remember seeing and liking one or two eps of it, so I know I'll enjoy this one. I'll look for the others as well.
Thanks!

Date: 2003-11-05 11:55 am (UTC)Er, the watching in order thing goes for Trigun, too. ^^;
I really wish I could reccomend Giant Robo to you, as it's my very favourite anime series, but even though it has incredible production values, the anime is intentionally styled to look retro... and I don't know how readily available it would be since it's not out on DVD in the US.
"I love tacos! Mmm!" "Dude, it's Ta*coon*!"
Date: 2003-11-05 02:03 pm (UTC)Not much else I can say that you would like. I personally like Dothack, but you'd probably find that too talky. I like YuYu Hakusho, you'd think it a Dragonball Z rip-off. Trigun, as somebody else mentioned earlier, is also pretty good, as are Cowboy Bebop and... oh, you might also like that Witch Hunter Robin series. I just saw a couple extra episodes (I've averaging about one episode of Twelve Kingdoms and Witch Hunter Robin a week - I can't help it, I just forget about them!), and though it's a little slow paced, you might like the nice drawings and the facial expressions and the dark atmosphere. Plus, the "cute" guy (I guess? He's quiet and has "hero" hair, and therefore must be the one girls swoon over) actually looks like a guy, so.
And when all else fails, you can always fall back on the greatest anime ever created, Speed Racer.
Yes, I'm kidding.

Date: 2003-11-05 02:54 pm (UTC)You expect me to believe you might not know a cute guy when you fall into bed with one? ;)
Thanks for the idea of FLCL though. People have mentioned it elsewhere a lot, I could/should probably give it a shot.

Date: 2003-11-09 01:07 am (UTC)But yeah, definately try and find those two. If it's pretty boys you're looking for, you'll find 'em here ;)
Gravitation is about the lead singer of a band who meets Yuki, a famous author, and falls head over heels for him even though he's cold and distant, and basically spends the whole series trying to write song lyrics and get close to Yuki.
Yami no matsuei is all about...er...hard to explain, but there are two really nice looking main characters, and lots of fun magic stuff.
anyway, check those out, tell me how you like em :) Also, i'll try and download Get Backers, you made it sound so good!

Date: 2003-11-09 09:17 am (UTC)I've found another great series this weekend: Dear Boys. It's about basketball, which would usually make me gag, but I actually like this. Lots of close relationships between the guys. ;)
