In the past I've seen this anime available for downloading. However, since I didn't know anything about it, I've skipped it. Since I'm now out of things to watch, FFU was one of the first things I hunted down and downloaded. Today I'm watching it.

During the beginning of it (before the initial credits/theme song played) I wondered if some other series was just taking advantage of the Final Fantasy name -- if it had nothing to do with the games' worlds at all. Then when the credits appeared, it did list that it was "Final Fantasy - By Square Enix" (Enix? Enox? I might be misspelling it, but it had the right logo and everything), so it's an official FF anime.

Exciting and wonderful, right?

Nope. Horrible, horrible animation (worse than Saturday morning cartoon level), dialogue which made me clutch my hands to my ears and yell "la la la la!" as loud as I could, but unfortunately that didn't block out the voice acting. (Speaking of which, I had to listen to this in English, and it took two hours even to get that to work! It was put out in gos awful .mkv file format. Yes, I had as much trouble as last time getting them to play, including making no other file types work and crashing my computer. Oh, and your trick didn't work for me, [livejournal.com profile] bouteillebleu. Thanks anyway though.)

The bad guy was some clown/mime thing which was just cringingly bad... but the second bad guy was worse. Mr. Fungus. A walking, talking, SMOKING mushroom. Bright blue. Smoking a pipe. At this point I thought maybe it was some sort of a spoof -- no one could come up with something this bad unless it was on purpose.

The two main characters (a couple of kids) are named Ai and Yu. Pronounced "I" and "U". I kept waiting for kids named A, Ee, and Oh to show up.

The one and only thing which caught my eye (and the reason I'm watching a second ep of this instead of just deleting it as fast as I can) is that I thought Jecht was in it. There's a mystery man with the same coloring (though later his hair was red instead), with the same scar across his nose. Mmm. If it were really him, I'd continue to watch this awful series. Wow, "awful" just doesn't do Final Fantasy Unlimited justice. It's worse than the worst Saturday morning cartoon, and worse than most every other animated thing I've ever seen.

Do yourself a favor, don't be tempted by the "Final Fantasy" name like I was. Avoid this at any cost.

ETA: Oh! I almost forgot. The Jecht-looking fellow has this giant gun attached to his arm. Before he uses it to blow away some bad guy, he strikes a pose and announces: "SOIL IS MY POWER!", which just makes me roll laughing. Then Mr. Laundry Soap Commercial shoots his gun, and a phoenix comes out. It's so funny and so bad... (And did I mention that the gun has a /beating heart/ inside it? In a glass chamber, so you can see it when he uses it?)

GAH, don't even bother downloading the rest of them. Kaze (your 'Jecht-looking fellow' there) is like a bad Vincent ripoff, who uses the same stock footage EVERY single damn episode with his stupid summoning Demon Gun thingiedookie. Kumo ('Cloud', boy, aren't we original) is amusing, and the expected Cid is actually cute and young for once, but.... Honestly, don't bother. It doesn't get a whole hell of a lot better. I made it halfway through the series and just quit, 'cause it sucked so bad. Squenix (Square-Enix) shoulda made an FF anime based on one of the GAMES.

Yes! That would have been wonderful, and that's what I had been hoping for when I downloaded this. Alas, it came in a 12 ep package, but I guess that just means it'll be taking up more room in my trash bin!

Well, you would have thought the movie would have had something to do with the games too, but...well...we know how that turned out.

Hm. You know, I don't think I've ever seen the whole movie. I saw bits and pieces of it, and that whole FF Movie Cast Dances to Michael Jackson's Thriller thing, which was funny.

Ah, sorry to hear about that. The only series in .mkv I've tried playing with mplayer was Yamibou, which only has one subtitle and audio track. Trying 'mplayer -alang ja -slang en' might work (at least, it ought to for DVD rips, but if you can't get mplayer to work...), though I'm not quite sure on the syntax or if alang and slang are the right options. Does mplayer not work at all?

Oh, and I've heard bad things about FFU as well. A friend informed me that the only worthwhile thing about it was playing "Guess the Summon" with the guy with the gun. (And you were right, it is Square Enix.)

How are you doing with Hikaru no Go, by the way?

I'm going to try to stop downloading .mkv files (at least when I know what they are in advance). They're just not worth the bother...

"Guess the Summon"

*snicker* The second one I saw, some box-like thing, was the worst! But now the whole series is deleted, so no more pain and torture for me!

Go? I watch a couple eps a week. I mostly like it, but it hasn't hooked me like some other series have. It's a little slower paced, so I'm not always in the mood for it.

Uh huh. Just wait until I sneak in and change your computer's wallpaper to a screenshot from it! That'll learn ya!
