The bad news and the good news

Rumsfeld says Iraq Interrogation Methods are just hunky-dory. (Raise your hand if this surprises you.)

I have to wonder at the surprise/shock people are showing at the American hostage being beheaded. Yes, it's a terrible thing, but what in the world do people expect? Even if you ignore all the horrible things that we are doing there (Hello riding a 70 year old woman like a donkey! Hello not just sexually humiliating prisoners, but doing it in some way that is especially offensive to Muslims! Hello using the prisoners as attack-dummies (without protection!) for the military dogs!), it's not as if all those citizens even wants us there... and with each passing day and more news of our torturing coming out, fewer and fewer are probably happy about it. But hey! They should be thankful we're there! No hurting us, guys! Just lay back and think of England! (Or is it 'think of the queen'?)

In very related news, fan_the_vote is really taking off! Fans have already donated over $1,000 to Kerry, with a lot more pledges to donate more! Fans are offering everything from food, bathing goods, custom fics, artwork, beta services, book printing, and tons of other stuff, so chances are there's something you'd want there! I understand the shock, because whilst growing up I was taught to believe that hundreds of years of atrocity were to be ignored, I cannot agree with anyone who condones the actions of our respective governments. It's horrible that we even have a divider between 'us' and 'them' to begin with: if 'us' equalled 'humans' then we'd be so horrified that 'politics' (as such) would never come up.

Like everyone, I do support the American and British soldiers stationed in Iraq, but to me this is because there *is* no difference between soldiers and citizens. A human life is a human life. I'm horrified because of the entire situation, and my blame rests on those who I believe, at base, to be responsible: Britain and America.

That community is such a good idea. My feelings about fandom is usually negative, but these folks (including you!) are such a refreshing sign of hope that fans can go beyond stupid wankery.
