Grump, grump (FFXI)
Jun. 9th, 2004 08:37 amI became a white mage because I wanted to be able to help folks. I wanted to run around and heal them when they were hurt, cast helpful spells on them, etc. One of the most helpful spells is raise (bring someone back from the dead), so when I finally got it, I was very very happy.
I don't raise people hoping to get paid (not that I've ever been offered anything), and I don't do it to be thanked (though that would be nice if it ever happened), so I suppose what happened last night was just too much to expect.
I'm currently stuck in Mhaura. I'm dealing with a series of quests which require RL hours of standing around doing nothing between each one (!!! exactly my point yesterday: the running around and hoop-jumping the game requires).
Background: On the ferry ride to Mhaura, the Sea Horror showed up. The boat was full of people. It was a bloody mess. Every five or ten seconds, another person died. Either I was the only white mage on the ship or the others were in hiding. I raised as I could, and when the ship docked I raised the people on land. Four of them were from the same party -- that's important to the story. Out of eight or so raises, I got one single thank you. Total.
Back to the story: So in one of the three hour periods of waiting, I decided to try to go get another clay imprint. I knew Buburimu Peninsula must be about the same level as the Dunes (which I have never had problems with), so I left the city, cast Sneak on myself, and set out at a run. A few moments later, and an unseen goblin cast Bind on me. Arg! Goblins are bad! It attacked and attacked while I was stuck. I used the /help command (my first time ever). No one came. Eventually Bind wore off, but the stupid (smart) monster cast it on me again. I survived the battle (thankfully), but decided to run back to the city instead of continuing on to get the imprint. Seconds later, just over a hill, I ran into the party I had raised. The party was standing around, doing nothing. The party who I had raised four of the six members did not respond to my /help call, even though it was in the same damned area. A goblin. Six of them, warrior-looking types. They could have killed a goblin in their sleep. Hell, any single one of their party members could have likely taken the darned thing in just a second or two!
Why the hell do I bother? What in the world made me think that helping random people would do any good? What do these idiots think, not helping someone who saved their asses? What is wrong with people? Hell, what's wrong with me for having expected anything other than what happened?
Bah.

Date: 2004-06-09 09:33 am (UTC)I'm sorry you are having so many bad experiences with raise. It seems to me that when Verity has raised someone, she usually at least gets a bow in thanks. Don't know why the immature twerps without any manners are gravitating towards you.
Myself, I've only used raise once since I got it and it was on someone who apparently already had a raise pending and was AFK. Total waste.

Date: 2004-06-09 09:56 am (UTC)Probably just to give me good material to grump about in my LJ. :)
Thanks! See you tonight, if the group happens!
Help help help! <Raise> in H-6! x10!
Date: 2004-06-09 11:17 am (UTC)Also, you've probably now seen why healing people fighting purple monsters that can kill you is a bad idea!

Date: 2004-06-09 11:42 am (UTC)1) That my naiveness made you feel anything different, but more importantly:
2) 99.99999% of my time thus far, I've had shout filtered out, so I had no idea you weren't responding to some of them! (The only time I let shouts through is when I need a teleport.)
I have to work on getting a realism filter of my own!

Fortunately or unfortunately, yes. Last night on the ferry I didn't heal/protect/shell people during fights just because there was a thunder elemental on the deck, and I recalled someone saying that they aggro to magic. In a way that makes me feel selfish, though on the other hand it doesn't make me feel dead. :)

Date: 2004-06-09 12:55 pm (UTC)If he won't give me the third one (which he may not, he should have this morning but didn't, I suspect my fame is lacking), then I'll leave. Eventually, when I go to Selbina to drop off more clay, I'll hop on the ferry and see if he'll give it to me.
Are you doing these because you've done all the other quests you can get in the three main cities already?
I've done only a couple in Windy, and fewer in Bastok. If I don't get the third quest in this Mhaura series and/or don't get offered the third gobbiebag upgrade when we go back to Jeuno tonight, I may camp out in Windy or Bastok and do some there. (Not that I have enough money for the third bag upgrade anymore, but I'd like to be offered it so I can start kicking myself to save money for it. :) )

Date: 2004-06-09 01:03 pm (UTC)Um, that is, if you'll forgive me for 'you should'ing you. But it's something to do that would give you forward progress on the game.

Date: 2004-06-09 01:26 pm (UTC)Rank 3 would be good, as it's one step closer to 5!
Thanks!

Date: 2004-06-10 10:26 am (UTC)Also, what level were those warriortypes? It's possible they were scared of going after something too strong for them, or they coulda still been weak from the raises, or even have no clue what the call-for-help thing is. ^^ Forgive me, taking the other side just for debate's sake. ^_~ Lord knows I've had my share of asshats too. >:3 (Ah, my no-Raise list.. *pets it*)

Date: 2004-06-10 01:57 pm (UTC)Lots of WHMs mention a no-Raise list. Do you keep it on a piece of paper? Use your blacklist? Or keep it in your head?

Date: 2004-06-12 07:37 am (UTC)Then there's just people you know are jerks and take their pleas with a grain of salt. Why it's important to be nice to people, your name gets circulated and you do gain a level of fame outside of the coded version. ^^
