With my decision of going back to leveling crafting, I dived back into the boards and combed through all the info there. When each synth costs me 10K, and it takes 50K to get .1 skillup, every little bit could help!

Note: I should probably post this on the CTY board, but that'd be akin to beating my head against a brick wall. Yes, this will be semi-rantish, and no, I don't really think I'll convince anyone, but it will allow me to get this off my chest.

Background: I have access to the best (NA) crafters on the Midgar server. I have access to inside information from our shared message boards (members only area). In that area, we hold no secrets back and share all of our knowledge.

If that's not enough, I have a ton of personal experience with crafting. I had no one to hold my hand through it. I did not have one single person I could ask "Hey, what's the best way to do this?". I did the research, I studied, I read everything I could.

That being said, it drives me crazy when people claim that the day of the week or the direction you face has a noticeable effect on things. Know what two of the top (NA) crafters on all of Midgar think?

Person one: Crafting on the same day as the element of your crystal means you'll get more skill ups.

Person two: Crafting on the day your crystal's element is weak to means you'll get more skill ups.

Two of the top crafters don't even agree! People who, like me, did it all themselves. People who WROTE the crafting guides everyone else uses! Know the only thing the top NA crafters agree on? That it's a darned complex system no one is likely to ever figure out.

Knowing what I do of people in general, thinking that the "X factor" is important is an understandable thing. My mother works in a psych hospital, and she's convinced that the people act crazier when it's a full moon. (This has been proven not to be true, but she won't believe that.) Humans need to see a pattern in things, they want to organize the chaos... then when they think they find a "truth", their minds tend to recognize or give more weight to the evidence that backs those "truths" up.

I'm not claiming to be perfect. I like to face west whenever I craft. It has nothing to do with elements of days or the in-game stars or anything else, I just started out facing west a lot, and it came to be how I "should" craft. However, I acknowledge that as my own little personal superstition. I wish others would do the same of their day/star fixation, instead of claiming them to be the One True Truth Of Crafting.

Um...

Just a quick note - last I heard, police stations and hospitals are busier on full moons. This from coppers and doctors. Make of that what you will.

Exactly my point. Doctors and cops report that, not an impartial person in the background counting numbers. Medical people, cops, firemen all think that things get worse on full moons, thus their minds look for evidence to support that. When an outsider/scientist looks at the raw data of numbers/cases/problems coming through the door, there is no difference based on moon phases.

If it's a busy day and a full moon, they'll nod to themselves and say "Typical".

If it's the same busy day and a half moon, they'll think it's just an odd thing and shrug it off.

On top of that, a full moon is more memorable. If you're having a bad work day and look up and notice a full moon, it sticks in most folks' minds better than a quarter moon does.

You have my admiration for pushing forward with your crafting even though it is like banging your head against a wall. It's a lot of gil that you toss around for no profit and little skill up. But if this were easy, there'd be more level 100 crafters, eh? :) [cheers Thistle on]
