MUSH Code, MUSH Code, I like MUSH code!
Dec. 9th, 2002 03:24 pmI like coding. I wish there was more on the MUSH that I needed to do. I like making something out of nothing (so to speak).
Coding somewhat satisfies the part of me what used to go into crafts; when some little program works, I feel the same way I do when a drawing comes out well.
I have to hold myself back. I actually make more commands than folks really need.
I enjoy having the whole MUSH before me. It's like when you're in your car at the top of a hill with a long, empty road ahead of you, horizon in sight, no cars between you and it. It's all there, you can see everything, you can do anything.
It's so much fun.

Hope you don't mind...
Anyway, my older brother introduced me to this MUDD he played on regularly, and I found out that if you earned a certain level, you could gain the privilege of designing and coding your own areas in the world and making up your own quests and monsters and such, and suddenly coding was fun again. I also managed to get a job testing a flash design tool, and I used my spare time testing it to make little games and interactive things with it. Most people that worked with me testing it just made animations, but I wanted the person using what I made to have more to do than just watch some movement... I wanted them to be able to play with it, and have it respond to them.
But, the big thing in your post that I connected with is something I have said every time someone asked me why I got into programming in the first place... "I like to create something from nothing," I'd say. So when I see someone else say the same thing, it makes me smile.

Date: 2002-12-10 01:55 pm (UTC)It's cool that you're getting to do something you like with it! I mostly code in my off-work hours, since my lowly tech support job doesn't require such things of me. (Stop snickering, I haven't always been tech support! Soon the economy will turn around and... and... and... :) )
Gotta cut this short, work calls.
