More FFXI only stuff. Two FFXI-only things, in fact!

1) The game (or my computer?) is currently having some seriously major issues. I've been digging in the Maze looking for silica, and I'm getting that tabbing=freezing bug. Or at least mostly it's that, sometimes it freezes while I'm just running. I was home for an hour for lunch both today and yesterday. Today I froze 4 times. Yesterday I froze 5 times. In an hour. And when I say "freeze" I mean my whole PC locks up. alt-tab does nothing, ctrl-alt-delete does nothing, turning it off does nothing. I need to unplug it to force a reboot.

Once today (the last crash/freeze) ctrl-alt-delete actually worked, and while I couldn't stop the programs by hand (pol and the full screen process were listed as 'not responding', but I couldn't end them), when I went into the processes and killed pol.exe by hand that ended it and I could restart the game.

This is a really big problem cause, you know, you kinda got to tab around if you expect to mine/dig. I'm not sure if it's happened in zones other than the Maze. I think not, but I could be wrong. (Plus I've spent 90% of my online time in the last few days in the Maze.)

2) This is that 'Oh no! It's sanity! *beats it till it goes away*' subject line point. I've been thinking about HQ stuff again. Since a Hauberk +1 is so much more expensive (and rare) than a Hauberk NQ, I decided to look at the HQed thick pieces to see if they'd be a better value.

NQ thick piece: 100K. (Accuracy: 2 Attack: 4 Evasion: -2)
HQ thick piece: 1-1.1M. (Accuracy: 2 Attack: 6 Evasion: -2)

A million more for +2 attack? For just one piece of the... four? thick pieces I need? (Edit: Wait, three pieces, I think? Hands, feet, legs?)

*sigh*

The HQ Hauberk has a lot more increased stats.
HQ = Def: 48 STR: 6 DEX: 6 Accuracy: 12 Attack: 12 Evasion: -10
NQ = Def: 47 STR: 5 DEX: 5 Accuracy: 10 Attack: 10 Evasion: -10

+2 acc, +2 att, +1 dex, +1 str. But that's for.. 8-11 million more in cost.

*sighs more*

It's really just not sane to be considering these pieces. But... I want them. But at those prices it doesn't make much sense... But...

Hm. On the other hand, if I were to buy 4 HQ thick pieces at 1 million extra each, I'd get +8 att for 4 million. The acc on the Hauberk would be nice, but... +8 attack for 4M vs. +2 attack/+2 acc for 8-11 million extra. ("Extra" being cost above the NQ price.)

Maybe that should be my plan. Get the HQ thick pieces as they become available (they're not sold very often) and then save for the HQ Hauberk after...

I wish the sane part of me would shut up and stop telling me how stupid it is to be considering all these HQs.

I don't know why you're crashing when you're just running, but I am very aware of the tab freeze bug. It's been around since I started playing. In fact, it got me killed in Dynamis just this Saturday...

I found it doesn't happen when I use a controller to tab around. So these days I use a Logitech USB controller when HELMing. Kinda screwed when Dynamising though. Damn SE and their PS2 favoritsm. >.</

The answer to your item troubles is simple: Use nothing you can't quest, or craft or get crafted because buying stuff in the game is stupid!

What's your base attack? like 350? 400? +8 would only be like 2% extra... I'd say save the money and buy your favorite WHM a Vermy ;)

It's something he wants to have, though, I doubt it's purely for the +1 bonuses he's getting. If hq is your thing, then by all means go for it and get them over-time. Can't get them all at once, just little by little build your white borders and blind people, Thistle.

Hmmm, true. I suppose there's an upper limit to how much bonus on a stat you can have? Is there a chart somewhere that tells you what that limit is?

And I think it comes down to that, yeah. It's something I can earn, it's something I can be proud of, it's something that'll impress newbies. :P But mostly, for some reason I don't understand, I just want them! Lots!

The crashing-when-running was rare compared to the tabbing bug. I'm glad to hear that it is a bug though, and not some issue with my computer. I was worried it might be getting too hot or the video card might be going (recall the really odd graphic thing I had when we were farming drakes and hippos).

Unfortunately there isn't a chart because the effectiveness of stats can vary per mob type. The best I could find was a post on Alla about Attack - "Attack has a limit on the bonus it provides, a point of diminishing returns. One can simplify the combat ratio further and see that its 1-DEF/ATK. This would tell you that with a mob def of 50, if you were to increase your attack from 300 to 310, it would not be as significant as raising it from 60 to 70. Basically there is a point where no matter how much it is raised; it may take an incredible amount of increase to see a benefit. "

There is a definitely a point where boosting a stat as much won’t make a difference. If I throw every bit of VIT gear I have on me, I have +52 VIT. Some exp mobs will hit me for an average of 70 - I can take away about 10 VIT, and they'll still hit me for an average of 70. So I can put other equipment into some VIT slots to boost other stats.

About a year ago someone parsed their average hit rate with +50 Acc, and then +60 Acc to see if a Peacock Charm was worth buying. I think it was something like a 2% difference in hit rate. Not exactly worth paying 20 million for....

Lei spent a year with his HNM LS getting a full set of some of the best PLD armor - a Koenig armor set. You probably know the effort that's required to get this stuff, abjurations and cursed equipment.

Apparently he decided it wasn’t good enough and spent the next year getting a full set of Kaiser Armor - Koenig + 1.

Wow. On the one hand I think that's a little crazy, but on the other hand: Good for him! So long as it gave him a goal in the game (as opposed to keeping him awake at nights worrying that his armor wasn't good enough), then I don't have a problem with him doing that.

But if he thought/said he was doing it because he needed to? Or worse, if he looked down on others for not doing the same as him? Then I'd have a problem with that.
