Heh, does anyone actually watch American Dad? It's on after Family Guy so I usually see it because there's nothing else on and it's too much of a pain to change the channel. Tonight's the first night I actually snickered at parts of it (not much, but now and then). But it's the last 10 seconds that I really liked and have a question about:

Some of the characters and many strange people in a room, and some unknown guy (who looked a little like the lead character, the father) came in and hugged an asian fellow. The background song was that great Don't Fear The Reaper. The text at the bottom was "In loving memory of Trahn "Jimmy" Ng".

I've googled, but can find no connection of that name with the series. I would guess he was a writer and died, but odd that I can find no connection... If it was that he died (which seems the most likely), then this is one of the best "In Loving Memory..." pieces I've ever seen on a show. Trahn/Jimmy looks so happy as he's hugged! So happy and perfectly content and couldn't wish to be in a better place. Paired with the bittersweet song in the background, it's such a touching 10 seconds!

Much, much, much higher quality stuff than I would have expected from this series.

Edit: I watched the credits in slow motion, but saw no mention of his name.

Edit 2: A FFXI joke! Like any good Dark Knight, my sole is black as night...

If I remember correctly, Jimmy Ng is an RCMP officer in Richmond, B.C. He was killed by several street racers. I believe he's a close friend of one of the animator.

I actually thought that part was just a joke. During the part where the fish gives the voice over, he mentions how one of the cast members died on the way to the studio in a mocking sort of way.

I'm seconding you. One of the running jokes was that the fish was pretending his life was a DVD and was recording commentary. During the fight scene between the Dad and his Boss he mentions that Ng (who 'played' the cook in that scene and was in the microfilm eating contest in an earlier scene) died tragically on his way to the studio. My boyfriend thought that might have been a reference to UHF, but I didn't ask him how.

Yup yup! That's what we got, too. The guy who apparently died during the making of the show. If it has other referances, we didn't catch them... I personally was too busy trying to get over the line:

"That man rode me like an animal for three hours! Do you have any idea what that's like?!"

GODS, I love that show.

Ah! That would make sense.

Thanks!

Oh, drat. I had been seriously multitasking during the show, so I wasn't listing to most of it. I guess I missed that!

Thanks. :)

Ah! See what I get for not paying more attention? I was mostly doing other stuff, and so just caught a couple scenes. Thanks for the info!

Ha! I was doing other stuff while watching, but that line caught my attention and made me snicker, too! I broke off in the middle of my conversation to just stare at the TV for a moment. Heehee!

I usually watch the show. It's not as good as family guy, but it beats the heck out of a blank screen.

Agreed. I think I'd like it a lot more if it wasn't shown after Family Guy. What can compare to that?

Hi,

I asked myself the same question, when I saw that episode. The only thing I found by googleling is about a Richmond Constable Jimmy Ng, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in 2002. I don't really know wether this is the guy we were looking for but the only one I could find.

One thing that also points in this direction is that Klaus, that german goldfish, when he comments the fighting scene, speaks of that Jimmy Ng-guy, who was "actually" supposed to play that asian cook in the background, died in a car accident on the way to the studio.

This is the website I found about Jimmy Ng. Check it out if you want.

By the way, that song at the end which I also found was very cool, was not Don't fear the reaper, but "Don't dream it's over" by Crowded House.

Ain't no thing. But I didn't know, how many people had already answered a lot of your questions until my own comment was posted. I guess this was because the follow ups to your question were not shown, when I read it.

So a lot of that information might have seem a little unnecessary. Sorry.

Take care.

No worries! Better too much info than too little!
