I spent roughly 547357639165471 hours in Gusgen Mines tonight, farming bone chips. I think the zone is the reason why Bastok people are all insane enough to actually like their newbie zones. If I see one more ghost of a dead child, I think I'll go mad and burn down all of Sandy's trees. Seriously, so many dead children. What the hell.

Other than that, I finished making my acid bolts. Ended up with about 10 stacks of quivers. Yay? Nope. Price fell by 50% overnight. WTF you idiot crafters. Undercutting by that much? Just how stupid are you? Whatever, they'll sell eventually at a better price. I'm not in a rush.

Also had just way too many run-ins with gilsellers. (I was stupid and brought some picks so I could mine while farming.) If the dead children aren't enough to depress someone mining there, the utter rudeness of the gilsellers would be. The few (thankfully so few) times I've mined in Oldtown, no one ever stole mining points. In Gusgen, stealing MP seemed to be the national sport. Sheesh.

All in all, a highly depressing night. I can't believe how sad the gilsellers made me (two wrongs do NOT make a right! I did not want to steal points from them! That would make me as bad as them) -- I didn't need the profits from mining, but I'm sure a lot of honest players there did, and I watched the gilsellers steal their points over and over again. While surrounded by the ghosts of dead children.

Wow, so depressing.

If I ever thought to mine.. Gusgen would not be the place for just that reason. Guh. Only thing I go there for are elementals. I MUCH prefer SSG for bone chips, but I'm not sure how well you could farm there. Honestly have no idea, for I have my furry tank that doesn't need any buffs or curing. The mobs are level 38, ghasts, so likely not too tough. Coming out of Norg, just past the unmarked door, go right and it will lead to tunnels and a room full of ghasts and oozes. :) The glacier is nice too. I get better drops in those two places then Gusgen.

Oh well, anyways if you need them and don't want to buy them, a good way is to chocobo dig, almost every area has them, south gustaberg too.
I also never really got the whole idea of 'stealing' mining points. More than one person can mine the same point, and in fact SE encourages the behavior by making pickaxes break less. If someone passes by and doesn't start mining the point I am mining, I will do the same when I see them mining and go find an empty one, but if they don't, then I don't see anything wrong in going by the default rules, a mining point is there, you can mine it.

I think I'm going to have to buy my bone chips. There are other things I can farm much much easier and faster (70K for a stack of dhalmel leather? And I can get it in under 30 minutes? When I farmed for hours for a 9K stack of chips?), so I'm going to do that.

I never thought about that till your comment. One person "owning" an active point is always how I've heard it being handled. It'd be interesting if everyone shared them all...
