Sweet and sour sauce... and FFXI

thistlechaserI love the sweet and sour sauce you get in the little packets. Bright red, nice and sweet, with some tang to them. But packets never have enough, so I decided to try to find it in a bottle. (I even found the website for the company that makes the packet, but they have no info on how to contact them or if you can order the packets yourself.)
14 bottles of different sweet and sour sauces later, and I still haven't found one that's a match for packets/chinese restaurant stuff (I suspect "cheap Chinese restaurant stuff" would be more accurate). Everything's too thick, has odd flavors, wrong color... So, because I've had so much success at cooking in the past, I decided to try to make my own!
Problem is, I can't even find a general recipe agreed on by the majority of websites, and I'm darned afraid to experiment (that never, ever works out well). I guess I'll try this one tomorrow and hope for the best.
INGREDIENTS:
* 3/4 cup white sugar
* 1/3 cup white vinegar
* 2/3 cup water (or pineapple juice)
* 1/4 cup soy sauce
* 1 tablespoon ketchup
* 2 tablespoons cornstarch
DIRECTIONS:
1. Place the sugar, vinegar, water, soy sauce, ketchup and cornstarch in a medium saucepan, and bring to a boil. Stir continuously until the mixture has thickened.
If anyone happens to know a better one (or thinks this one looks odd), please please please post!

FFXI: Okay, digging has become as hard and annoying as it was pre-nerf. For the second night in a row, it took me two hours to get my 100 items... two hours and THREE trips back to town for greens! And this was in "unpopular" zones, too. What the god damned hell, Midgar people. Stop digging! Shoo! Go alway and leave me in peace long enough to get my 100 items! *grumble*
After that I leveled PUP to 5, to see if I'd dislike it as much as I suspected I would. Yep, I did. Those puppets are freaky and I don't want to spend time looking at them. If I want to work with a pet, I'd go back to leveling BST (or maybe SMN).

Dear Japanese FFXI artists:
1) Please stop drawing breasts that are larger than the woman's head.
2) The whole "sexy with a taru" = "sex with a child" thing is creepy as hell. Seriously. If a disturbingly well hung elf raping a bare-chested, hairless, crying little taru girl shows up in my nightmares tonight, I'm going to hunt you down and hurt you. Or take away your drawing supplies.

Date: 2006-08-25 05:25 am (UTC)Which sweet 'n sour sauce are you referring to...? The only ones I know that comes in packets are a little different. (Though they're called plum sauce and could be something entirely different than what you're aiming for.) If you're talking about the sauce used for things like the standard sweet and sour _______ dishes I can ask my mom for it. From what I can tell though, your ingridents are correct, it's just a matter of tweaking it to your tastes.
Note: the bright red is usually just food coloring, home made SNS sauce will probably never look like that. (Thank goodness!)
Note #2: mix the cornstarch with water first before pouring it into the heated mixture of the rest, it reduces the chance of getting large clumps of starch.

Don't put in the cornstarch until the VERY end, just put in some, and if it's not thick enough, add some more. If it's too thick, add a tiny bit of hot water.
Put everything in order, stop when you hit the cornstarch. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat, put in the cornstarch (mix it with about 1-2 tablespoon of water to dissolve it) and stir constantly until desired thickness.

Do you not realize that while it might be every guy's fantasy (which it's not anyway, so!), the idea of something like that even being physically possible is absurd? Not to mention the fact that most women, if there were that huge, would have a reduction done simply because it is uncomfortable as all heck? Mine are about HALF that side and they annoy me like nothing else!
And I still don't understand males and their obsession with breasts anyway. I've asked several of my guy friends and they always give me the same reason: "Well... uuuuh... they're just so round! And soft!" Er. Okaaaaaay. So I can think of about five other things that're round and soft off the top of my head, probably more if I really tried. So, uh. I still don't get it.

FFXI isn't too bad about the whole breast thing I think. They have Lion in there, but most of the females seem reasonably endowed.
As for digging... yeah. I can get my 100 items in about 20 stacks on a good night, but the past couple of times I've given up at ~30 stacks and 80-90 items. I'll go tonight and hope for the best, but I'm just gonna go for the sake of skillup this weekend. Pashhow and Jugner are even less popular than the Meri Mts (understandably), so I'll probably head there.

Yes, thankfully. This was all fan-drawn stuff, not official stuff.
