Gold and Assaults and 'Summerfest' and such (FFXI)

Way too much of my attention has been on Chaser the goldsmithing cat lately. I did the 78 to 80 stretch and spent OMG way too much money. I ran out of synthing materials at 79.8, and be damned if I wasn't going to get to 80, so hit my small stock of plat ingots, doing stupid synths to try to get the last .2. I spent roughly 750K for those last .2 skillups. Was very stupid, but I got 80!

Nimbex was totally right, while it's going to give me grey hair, skilling on elemental ore -> bead is very nice. 7 synths total, 4 skillups, 0 fails! Assuming the prices do not fall (ha ha ha), that'll be about 20K profit per synth. (Two sold, five left to move.) I'm keeping track of profits to see how well I cover any breaks. (A break/ore loss is ~100K loss.)

Yay Assault static started back up tonight! We were going to do two new and two repeats, but we liked Saving Private R-whoever so much we did that four times.

The reward for this haiku writing better be damned, damned good. Midgar sucks at writing them as much as we do at Besieged, and so we're 24th out of 32 servers. I'm figuring we'll probably see what prizes the other servers get and if it's good enough we'll churn out more.

That's leaving a lot to speculation! I need to write more myself - I just can't believe they're not letting us have the special event if we don't do this. There's only 11 days left! *cries*

The problem with this event is that you writing more will make no difference. The thing that appears to count is number of official threads. So to 'win', LSs that haven't made official threads yet need to. :/ Nothing we can control.

Yeah, that annoys me to the highest degree. All the shells I'm in already have official threads (except for GiantDonko; they wouldn't let me make a community for it because I haven't given out any linkpearls. Maybe I should...)

It makes me feel powerless, and that sucks. Dx

All I can say (again) is that the reward better be worth it. Not a silly hat, not something for our moghouses. Worth it, like outpost teleports-level usefulness.

They're trying to force us to use this stupid portal thing, they better reward us for doing so.

I'll have to check the POL site when I get home now, just to see how far down Ifrit is in the rankings. I've never visited the LS site, though maybe I'll go just to write a haiku about what a craptastic event this is.

When I was raising Smithing, I swear to god it would happen at least 3 times per 10 levels that I'd run out of materials at .9... 93.9, 78.9, whatever, but it was always at .9. Hell, I'd get to .9 with like 5 synths left and of course NOT get it. /sigh.

I feel like Squenix mislead us regarding Celestial Nights. The initial posting about it said "The special event in Vana'diel will begin once the bamboo decorating the World Portals are completely covered with Community poems." To me, that sounded like all people had to do was to fill up the page, which most servers did in a couple of days, and then we'd have the rest of the period to enjoy the event. Now they spring the five moogles thing on us after about a week. Even the leading servers only have three.

So what started out as a gimmicky, but kinda cute, idea is now just a pain, particularly if it's number of linkshells participating instead of number of poems posted. I'd be less annoyed if they were honest about it from the beginning.

I think I'm going to just try to forget about the event. SE is just trying to force people to use the portal thing, and I highly doubt the reward will be worth it, and even if I did care and the reward was worth it, what would be the point? I can do nothing to help which is the unfairest thing of all.

They really dropped the ball on this one. :/

Heh, isn't that the worst? In some ways, it's not as bad in goldsmithing (I struggle for every .1 as hard as I did for a full level in leather and all subcrafts, so .8 and .9 are just another 'level'), but in a way it's rougher because each full level in gold means so much more!

Well, yeah, it's pretty obvious what they're trying to do, but come on. It is a creative way to garner some interest, and they're trying to make it fun.

I don't like having my arm twisted into anything. Yes, haikus are fun, but the choice to use the site or not should be ours -- we shouldn't be forced to do it to try to get some unnamed reward.
