The oddest thing has been going on with me lately: I've been craving(?) food I'd never eat. I can always use the 'meat craving' feeling to know when I'm not eating right. Today was especially bad: biscuit for breakfast, "pickle sandwich" for lunch (free lunch at work, but it was all sandwich meats, so I took bread and put pickles and mustard on it), a ton of popcorn when I got home so I wasn't hungry for dinner and just had a tiny bit of pasta with a bit of sauce. Very little protein and, well, very little of anything else.

So now I'm sitting here thinking of the time all those years ago I made some sort of meat in the slow cooker. Put a chunk of some cheap cut into the crock pot, pour in a bunch of BBQ sauce, let cook for 10 or so hours on low. When it was done, it fell apart when touched with a fork.

Even if I had that sitting here in front of me now, there's no way I could put meat into my mouth. (Eek ack blech yuck.) So it's odd to be thinking of it almost... fondly? Not exactly like I miss it, but... I have no idea how to describe it. Sort of like craving it, but how can you crave something you wouldn't willingly eat?

Tomorrow I have to eat better, for sure. I skipped the farmer's market on Sunday, but I have to go next time (and today's only Monday, bah).

You're craving meat because, in just looking at what you ate today, you're missing a lot of proteins and the like that come from that. Your mind equates that to what you know has those things, so that why you're probably thinking about it, even though you'd never eat it. So... eat better tomorrow. o.o *pokes*

Yes, exactly what I was going to say.

Mmm, protein.

Slow cookers are made of win.

Meat, too, is made of win.

I guess I've just never understood the psychological aversion to meat-consumption. I knew a fanatical vegan in college- so much so, she forced an all-rice-and-green-veggies diet on her dogs. Didn't bother with soy or other protein-rich foods. Just lettuce, spinach, etc and rice. I swear, I caught those dogs eyeing me and mumbling to themselves "oh yes, we knows what you're made of. Oh yes. Soon. Soon."

I'm very anemia-prone myself. And I've found no vegetable capable of keeping me supplied enough with iron that I don't need supplements. Iron supplements cause physical pain, so I'd rather eat the red meat once or twice a week. Plus, fish (one of my favorite things to cook) contains thinking-chemical precursors (which, interestingly enough, if you take enough in supplement form, makes you smell slightly fishy).

Luckily most folks aren't like that.

Yeah, I used to love being able to put stuff in it before work and come home to a ready dinner. And nothing like the apartment smelling like good food when you've been out all day!

Yeah, today's protein day. Had an egg sandwich this morning (blech, don't like eggs much but I make myself eat them sometimes) and we're having pizza for lunch.

Yeah, I'm trying to eat protein-heavier today. I had an egg sandwich for breakfast (blech, eggs), and we're having pizza for lunch. :)

There are two foods in life that I'd never be able to live without - red meat, and sushi. And living in the midwest, I get some incredible steaks here. I don't eat AS much of it as I used to, but I to have red meat at least once a week, usually weekends when I have more time to enjoy it.

But, red meat isn't the only source of protein, either. I don't know how you are with pork and chicken, but there is that. Otherwise, a handful of steamed, salted edamame now and then woouldn't hurt.

When my mother has to explain me to people, she tells them I don't eat anything with a face. :P That about sums it up: no meat, no fish (which counts as 'meat' to me). But yeah, there are other sources of protein, I just need to be good about eating them! (Usually I am, yesterday was just a bad day.)

Well can't go wrong with edamame, then. A lot of grocery stores will sell bags of it in their frozen veggie section. I buy half a dozen bags at a time and it lasts me a while, since one bag usually contains 2-3 servings. But... I'm notorious for going through an entire bag of edamame in one sitting.
