To echo my entire friends list: WE WON! We did it! Yay!

(Unfortunately it looks like Prop 8, the ban on same-sex marriages, will pass. :( But I'll think about that tomorrow.)

WE WON! No more evil! A chance for hope! YAY!

I'm not sure there won't be any more evil, but yes, yay!

Prop 8 is... grr... Prop 4 is also annoying... It's 50/50 as I write this... Anyway.

Like Obama is just going to stride into the White House and switch the giant 'Evil'/'Not Evil' light switch to the opposite side.

And Bush'll smack his forehead "So THAT'S what I was doin' wrong all these years! Shoot!"

That is to say, I think you're a little too excited, Thistle. :P

I can't tell you the sense of relief that's just flooding over me right now. I didn't realize how scared I actually was until I didn't have to be scared anymore.

Sure there will be no evil! See the comment below yours for how that'll work! ;)

Here's a good URL for the prop thing: http://vote.sos.ca.gov/Returns/props/59.htm Yes, 4 is annoying, too. :/ Both 4 and 8 look like they'll go the "wrong" (to me) way. :/

*gasp!* You know about that switch, too?! I thought that was an insider secret!

The whole fear thing hit me midafternoon, before the first results started coming in. Then the first couple were close-ish and I just knew things were going to go wrong. Then it started looking better and better and wow, suddenly I got hit with that whole relief thing. No more "4 more years of this crap...". I feel like I'll sleep well tonight (when I can finally turn the TV off and go to bed). :D

Not just won - but won overwhelmingly. A shame about prop 8, but it was a close run, and you know it's gonna come as long as we give it some time.

I learned to never underestimate the Orange Curtain again! But hell, I'll take it.

I am happy that Obama won; I also don't envy him. He's inheriting a (still) deeply divisive country during a recession. And I doubt the recession is going to end any time soon. Sure, he will be a massive improvement over the current president if nothing else, but that is not saying much. I think even Cobra Commander would've been an improvement.

I found out that my voting choices were the minority in my house. =( But hey, at least my guy won! =D

First -- OBAMA -- FUCK YEAH!

Okay...that out of the way I cast my vote yesterday as you know, and I take great solace in knowing that MY vote neutralized that fucking bitch's who didn't give candy to pro-Obama kids on Halloween. =^.^=~~~ Seriously. WTF does that do other than prove you're a fucking bitch, and ensure that the kids you scorned stay Democrat? I hope her house got egged. :)

I read the posts above about the sudden absence of fear, and yeah, for me it was a lot like that moment of chills and sweats when your fever breaks when I turned on the news to hear 'The nation has a new President Elect, Barack Obama'.

This election was shitty for me. No matter who won, we get another goddamn politician in office. Not a statesman, not a leader, but a damn politician. A pretty face who wins a fucking popularity contest, where none of the people judging have the capacity to gauge which of the contestants would make the best leader. McCain, Obama, Ron Paul, they all would fuck us. Obama may have been the best among the choices, but the american people will still be screwed.

*dies* I'd have voted for Cobra Commander!

And yes, I feel bad because people are going to give him crap because he doesn't fix things right off the bat. Who could!

'The nation has a new President Elect, Barack Obama'.

Just reading that made me smile. :D

Oh, huh. I guess it's not a common term over in California? Let me find a Wiki on it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Curtain

Basically, it's "the conservative part of California" - the part nobody ever really pays much attention to, since the Californian stereotype places the state as so overwhelmingly liberal.

Oh, huh. Maybe I just missed the term thus far!

You're not being fair. I have no illusions about politicians—of course they do the occasionally questionable thing and they try a little bit too hard to appeal to as many people as possible—but that's exactly the point. In a democratic environment, you need politicians—somebody who cares (or pretends to care) about all the minority groups and makes the appropriate compromises.

Look at it another way. George W. has been trying to be a leader instead of being a politician. How did that work out for him?

It's a semi-common term in Southern California. The term "Orange Curtain" probably doesn't mean much unless you know a little bit about Orange County. And, no, having seen the show "O.C." once or twice doesn't count.

Incidentally, I grew up behind the Orange Curtain.

Ahh, that explains it. I only know it in its basest form, as "the largely conservative part of California". In fact, until I read the Wikipedia, I didn't even know where exactly it was, though I knew it had something to do with Orange county. I thought it was almost as common as a term like "The Bible Belt", but I guess I was mistaken!

Ah, good, I was worried I had missed some basic term. I'm from Northern CA, almost never been south...

GWB wasn't being a leader - he doesn't have the capacity. He was being political in a time of heightened anxiety. Instead of making sure all the minorities' interests are taken into consideration, he just promised to keep people safe when they were afraid.

I know I have some strange ideas about government. Read too much of the classics. Machiavelli, Plato, etc. As I see it, neither Obama or McCain would change things much. Especially considering the President is supposed to be predominately concerned with foreign policy, not 'fixing' the economy.

From most of the reporting I'm hearing, the passing of Prop 8 had a lot more to do with the black/latino vote. Black people tend to be a religious bunch, according to reports, and religion makes them vote for the redefinition of marriage.

The particularly sad part is hearing all the (particularly older) gay couples arguing how prop 8 is denying them various civil rights...And black preachers responding "Nope, sorry, not the same thing as what we went through." Just further goes to show that black people voted for Obama because he was black, and they obviously knew nothing about his policies or views.
