When I contacted my web hosting about yesterday's issue (Google thinking my site does Bad Stuff) I was told that in less than a month he'll be shutting down his servers. Bah.

Anyone have recommendations for new web hosting? Simple is better (I think I won't worry about the site at all, just have it be a dumping place for all my screenshots and various images, no more actual pages). Price isn't as important as ease of use and support.

Thanks!

Edit: Dreamhost is having a good sale (unlimited space and bandwith for as long as you host with them) so I went with them. Trying to get everything set up now. Thanks for the recs!

Eh, I still have an old Yahoo website (from when it was still Geocities) where I still dump things from time to time. I don't use it for much else other than random storage.

I liked DreamHost when I was with them. I am using NetFirms now which is less expensive and less, er, proactive about possibly illegal file sharing.

But if all you want is a place to store your pictures, you have a permanent lj account, so why not use the scrapbook feature? I never downloaded a client, just use the web interface, but there are clients, and it's moderately simple to use.

I suppose I would second the DreamHost recommendation. It's really cheap, easy to use, etc...

You probably don't do much UNIX type stuff (if any ^o^) but they also allow that -- if you learned, etc...

I have been very happy with Dreamhost for all their webhosting stuff... the only bad thing (in this case, the only shitty thing) is that their spam filtering sucks, so be careful if the domain you're moving has your only email attached to it.

It is possible to run your own copy of "spamassassin" under the free shell account they give you, which might give you marginally better spam filtering, but maintaining your own spam rules is a pain in the ass and requires regular updates and tweaking.

I'm glad to hear so many recommendations of it!

My last webhosting had really bad spam filtering as well, so I pretty much just switched over to gmail as my main address. I'll probably continue to handle it that way.

None, yeah. I used to know Unix stuff, but that was years ago and I've forgotten it all now. I got a backup from my old site, now I'm going to have to look up the exact command (arguments, anyway) for untarring it.

I was going to look at NetFirms before deciding, but when I saw DreamHost was having a birthday sale (unlimited disk space and bandwidth for as long as you have an account with them) I had to go with them. They were only selling 1,111 of those accounts (11th birthday) and they were down to 30 left.

I did think about the LJ hosting, but... it's probably unfounded, but I don't really trust LJ. (Silly, really, with how many years they've hosted my journal...) I'd rather keep them elsewhere.

Heh! I probably still have a geocities account, too. I have no idea what the name/password is though...

Go to the directory you'd like to untar it into and then do:
tar xvf

Or, if it's also gziped:
tar zxvf

With the arguments being:
unZip
eXtract
Verbose
File (as opposed to standard in)

that is...
tar xvf filename or
tar zxvf filename

Silly me using < and > in my comments!

I'm late, but I would have recommended Dreamhost anyway. :) I love it.

Thanks! Turns out it was all GUI based, so my concern was pointless. :P
