I finally hit 55 on my Hunter (yay!) so I logged him off to make a DK. I had a vague idea on names, I wanted to use a character from
loupnoir's The Durmstrang Chronicles. ("But Thistle! You said you weren't into HP fandom anymore!" It's true, but that series of stories is really good reading on its own. It has magical elements, it has HP story elements, but I don't consider it HP fanfic.) Many of the characters have nice strong Russian or German sounding names, which would work for a Death Knight. Driving home, I thought I'd use the name Kessler (for a troll), but once I switched to that elf (blood elf?) the name didn't fit anymore. I was tempted by Sieg (short for Siegfried, which I'm sure would have been taken), but I was worried people would think I was trying to slip something Nazi-ish in. Haken, while not the strongest sounding of the names, fit the elf's looks best, so yay! So here's.... Haken!
Best part of DK: Horsie! Or, um, goat-horsie? I'm really not sure what's going on with those horns on its head.
Someone tell me how this thing flies?
When my Tauren Hunter was my only character, I thought I wasn't seeing the details on the character models because I was so tall (most races only come up to my thigh), but nope. Now that I'm a short race, I can see it's just lack of detail in general. Bah. :(
All in all, I'm unsure what I feel about DK. WoW is already so amazingly easy, and DK is like WoW easy concentrated down. I have only one blue piece of armor on my 55 Hunter, a character I've put a lot of time into... and this DK of mine is getting piece after piece of blue armor (I think 5 pieces tonight alone?) just handed to him. I had to spend a long time getting my mount on my Hunter, but my DK had his (a better one!) within an hour or so of being made.
WoW has always felt like cheating to me, and DK feels even more so. I don't know. In FFXI, leveling up gives me a feeling of accomplishment. I hit 55 on Hunter and 56 on DK tonight and didn't feel anything (I hardly even noticed, especially on DK). I really don't know. I wish I could feel more for WoW...
High point of the night: Yay guild! I put my DK on the server with all the ex-FFXI LS folks, so I got to talk to everyone! Yay! That's a very big plus. :)

Date: 2009-03-07 06:26 am (UTC)-DKs are totally hacks, I agree.
-Tauren's are the greatest race (like galka) and they crush gnomes.
-WoW is like eating a bag of Smartfood crack(pop)corn over the course of the day and you get little bits of enjoyment instead of all at once.
-FFXI is like leaving that Smartfood bag on the counter for 2 weeks before finally cracking it open and devouring half the bag in 5 minutes and then putting it away for 2 weeks again. Most of the enjoyment comes from the long build up to the achievement!
-Naming convention is as follows! Veloxe (original character, WAR), Veloxedk (I'll give you one guess as to which class he is), and then Belfoxe (my blood elf (belf) paladin).
-I already have the name for an Undead Rogue if I ever so choose to create him that follows my convention.
-I r name genius.
Screw you livejournal.

And here I thought you hated Rogues. ;)

I guess if the "little bits" are really tiny bits of enjoyment (like how flying is cool... even though I've done it 74987401793410 times now so it's slightly less cool), then I guess I agree.
I just feel like I have zero emotional connection to WoW. In FFXI, Thistle is me. In WoW, I was sort of feeling somewhat a little tiny bit like my Hunter was me (even though he's horribly ugly).... and now I'm starting a whole new character. It's like WoW tries to keep you from being attached...

Yeah, playing WoW after FFXI takes some effort, but since I can't play FFXI due to physical reasons... I'm stuck. I make things to do by leveling multiple alts with multiple crafts, and playing with insane achievements. 9.9 (Like I'm going for the Loremaster, sure I wanna do nearly 3k quests!, and will likely be buying epic flying on my fifth alt.)
I miss FFXI so much, but I don't miss the pain. GoV is a great group of people, and I have a ton of fun goofing off with that. That's a huge help. We've been told we should pod cast our instance runs because we get so silly during them. ;)
Speaking of people, we're glad to have you. Don't feel like a third wheel. You are welcome!

Date: 2009-03-07 05:36 pm (UTC)For leveling, you don't really need a very powerful computer to run at a decent resolution. It's when you play in groups, especially the larger 25 man groups, that it becomes an issue because all the extra player models and spell effects on the screen put quite a load on the computer. And not just the graphics card, it's harsh on the CPU as well.
At the very least you should try 1024x768. I run at 1920x1200 with max special effects since I recently got a new computer. If you press Ctrl-R (I think that's the default keybind), it will show you your frames-per-second near the bottom of the screen. See what you get at various resolutions. You need about 20 for it to be playable.

Date: 2009-03-08 06:03 pm (UTC)Finally. Took 'em long enough to do.
Anyway, if you're ever on and bored and wanna say hi, give me a poke! I'm on Hakkar now, my main's name is Kavke. I'd love to have you! Nobody ever comes and says hi to me, I always have to go hunting people down... ;_;

Date: 2009-03-08 08:27 pm (UTC)How do you tell I'm a non-WoW person? I would have rather started as level 1! I like learning as I go along, working for things, stuff like that. Talent points were great! Something to look forward to as you level up-- wait, why is it I have 12 of them? I just spent them... all I did was a couple quests... Oh, I get them for questing? :/

Yay! I don't have a character there now, though Haken on Hakkar would have been amusing. :D If I make a third, I'll pick one of those! <3

Date: 2009-03-08 10:28 pm (UTC)Semi-related: I wondered at the very low amount of gold you start out with. The average player couldn't have ~20 gold at 55, could they? Then I realized that they probably started it so low to prevent abuse. :/

Yay, thanks! Most of the time when I'm quiet it's because I forget to watch the little text box. I've played most of the time so far ignoring it, so it's hard to remember to keep an eye on it now. :P

Date: 2009-03-08 11:48 pm (UTC)Oh, believe me. You have a lot of learning to do as a DK. It starts out fairly easy, but that's just to catch you up to people of the same level. Keep going and your talent points come as normal, not to mention it's almost harder because you start with more abilities and get them faster than if you were leveling from scratch. I've seen far too many idiot DKs, because they never bothered to pay attention to what they were doing as they went along...
Yay! I don't have a character there now, though Haken on Hakkar would have been amusing. :D If I make a third, I'll pick one of those! <3
You don't have to make a real character to level up -- I've got little level 3-11 characters on all sorts of servers, just because I'll make one to say hi to someone, chitchat for a bit, then go back to my main. Even if you don't want to actually level on my server, you can pop by and say hello!

Date: 2009-03-08 11:51 pm (UTC)Not to mention the fact that if you can make a DK, you already have a character level 55 or higher. Or you're making it on a friend's server. So I guess, by all rights, you should probably be all set money-wise... and if not, it's not like it's hard to earn it.
I do like the fact that you get a bunch of free 12-slot bags to start off with. It makes me really tempted to level a DK on my own server to be a bank alt. A free mount, free bag space, etc. Sounds win to me!

Date: 2009-03-09 12:12 am (UTC)A lot of people get bored with WoW once they hit max level, but for me? That's when the game really begins. I don't know how many instances you've run, but that was always the best part of the game for me. Unfortunately, there's not much to it at low-levels. Once you hit max, though, raiding comes into play... and that's what I love.
There's something really exciting about grouping up with a bunch of other people and hitting up a raid. You have to coordinate, learn the strategy, and then pull it off. Some fights are extremely dull, but others are a blast. Especially once you start getting to places where certain classes play specific roles.
As for not being attached, that's so untrue for me. I ADORE my hunter. She's me. I've played her so long, had so many adventures with her, and have gotten so attached to her that I have this nasty habit of referring to myself as an orc. Sure, I've got alts. Some of them I really love playing, too, like my druid. But Kav will always be me and I don't think I could ever stop playing her entirely for another.
Also... I know I'm talking way too much, but I gotta add this! WoW may not be as gorgeous as FFXI, but wait 'till you hit Northrend. Some of the places there are so pretty. It's like parts of Canada, Alaska, and Iceland all combined. And get yourself your own flying mount, then just soar over places. Sometimes I just fly around on my drake for the hell of it. In other words, I know the game may not seem completely fantastic, but you're sort of stuck in the crap part of it right now. Get out of Outland (I hated Outland) and check out Northrend. And the questlines there are fantastic, too. They're actual chains that tell stories, and some of them were like reading books. Maybe you won't like it as much as I did, if you're not such a lore-nerd, but give it a shot. Just keep in mind that you really haven't seen all the game has to offer. It may or may not be what you like, but it's worth a go. And it IS a lot more fun with friends, that's very much for sure.

Date: 2009-03-09 04:27 am (UTC)Only two low level ones that I could solo. I guess it was okay? Would have been better if I could have used the armor (too low).
There's something really exciting about grouping up with a bunch of other people and hitting up a raid.
One of the big good things that WoW has over FFXI is that I can solo. I don't want to work with other people! :P Until a couple days ago, I didn't even have a guild.

Maybe it's because my hunter is so ugly, or maybe it's because I only play a month or two a year, but I don't feel that at all. I wish I did, it'd attach me to the game more. :/

Woo, can't wait! When's flying? 70? I doubt I'll make it this time, but next MMO vacation maybe! :D
I'm glad you like it so much! It's good to have a place to get away from reality for a while...

Date: 2009-03-09 04:30 am (UTC)Oh heck yes. I feel so guilty and/or stupid. Basically all I do is press random buttons in combat. Engage, 3-4-5-6-7-8-9-... oh it died? Yay! That's not how it's supposed to work, but I've only been doing this for a day or two!

Oh, that's a good idea! I won't be able to play again until the end of the week, but I'll try to remember which server you're on! :D

Date: 2009-03-09 03:37 pm (UTC)Hehe. That's why you find instances you can do on-level -- so it's actually a challenge, and so the gear actually means something. But of course, that also assumes you want to group, which leads on to...

The reason I play an MMORPG is because, well, that's what it is. A Massively Multiplayer Online RGP. There's other people there, and you're supposed to work with them. I'd be bored to tears with WoW if there wasn't other players. Sure, sometimes I like to go off and do things by myself, when I want to, which is why it's a nice game for the diversity. But if that's all I ever wanted to do I might as well go play Fable, or Oblivion, or Fallout III forever and ever.
Woo, can't wait! When's flying? 70? I doubt I'll make it this time, but next MMO vacation maybe! :D
Flying is, technically, level 70. And then once you hit Northrend they take it away from you... 'till level 76 or 77, I can't remember now. And you gotta pay for it all over again (*muttergrumble*). WoW may not be as hard as FFXI in some places, but it's an enormous grindfest all the same. So there's definitely a ton of stuff to do, and a lot of it takes a very, very long time... it's just very, very boring...
