Two posts in two days! I'm on a roll!

The whole world is talking about FFXIV (FF14), so I should probably post about that, too. I wouldn't want to be kicked off the world!

I'm very torn about it.

On one hand, I don't want to play another MMO ever. I said 'never again' after FFXI and now I'm on WoW, but I mean it! No more!

Related to that hand, I'm not really interested in playing another FFXI-ish game, even if it's only the races that remain the same between the two games (and I don't believe that).

Semi-related to that, I do not trust SE. Period. They claim 14 will have soloing content in it, stuff that you can get done in "40 minutes" (why 40? that's an odd number to use as an example). However, they claim that now about FFXI as well. Unless this game lets you reach the highest level while soloing (fairly soloing, not FFXI BST or BLM soloing), AND lets you do all missions, quests, etc solo, then I am not interested in it.

Now, on the other hand... it's FFXI. A fresh start! And, while I have no interest in putting another five years into a MMO, especially one made by a company I do not trust... it's tempting. (Why's it tempting? I don't know!)

Related to that hand:

Eeeee! It's me! My character model, hair, hair color, everything! Just seeing that picture is enough to make me want to check it out.

When word was it would only be supported on the PS3, I had zero interest in it -- I would not buy another gaming system for just one game (like I have five times before!), but... it's for PC as well.

*sigh* I hope I can be strong and not even buy it just to see what it's like, I do not trust SE and I don't want to get hooked again, but... but...

I think 40 was used as an example... just to say that 'Yeah people who don't have a lot of time to spare can still play'... not that things will only take 40 minutes to accomplish.

Ah, maybe! That seems logical.

I think that's a fair enough request. Given their recent workings with FFXI and attempts to get it to more of a solo/low party game I'd expect solo to be easier and be able to get, if not max level, at least very high.

AND lets you do all missions, quests, etc solo, then I am not interested in it.

Honestly to me I think that won't happen. It's SE, it's all about the storyline and it's an MMO so it's all about other people. A lot of the game will be more solo oriented but I think it will be closer to a 50-50 with solo vs group events. As opposed to current day FFXI where it's like 20-80 solo vs group.

I'm going to give it a fair shot. I am also going to use it as an excuse to get a newb PC (muwahahaha) but I mean, it's probably going to be one of the MMOs that stands a chance in getting my attention. I feel like FFXI is kinda out staying it's welcome now and it's almost time to move on (perfect timing for me with FFXIV). So, it's probably going to be the closest thing to an FFXI experience I can get. I hope it's not too WoW-ized though cause I really didn't like the way WoW makes all you're work almost pointless every 5 or so months and then every year or 2 makes all the work of that last year utterly pointless by raising the level cap.

Oh well, if this falls through at least I have Star Wars: The Old Republic to fall back on as far as MMO's go! Hurray Star Wars!

Agreed, which will probably be the killing point for me. While it is fun to work with friends, I do not want to be required to do so. I do not want my progress to be held hostage to being able to get 5 other people to work with me.

And yay new computer! I'd probably have to get one as well, but that's not a bad thing!

I'm thinking we're going to see more things like duo and trio, sorta like WoW. Where WoW has like, 2 person and 3 person quests we'll have similar things for missions. Like, start off solo, eventually they will get harder and you might need to bring in a buddy. Then maybe a little harder after awhile and you grab a 3rd. And you kinda work your way up in the line until eventually you'll need a full party or however many people to down like, the last few missions of a storyline.

Could be, but that'd be a deal-breaker for me. I'm not interested in being forced to find a group to help me with something, to either hope that other people need whatever I do and need the jobs that I can bring, or to make other people give up their own time just to help me.

I like doing things with friends, but that should be my choice, it should not be forced on me.

Well, you're not forced to do missions and what not. Just like in WoW you're not forced to do any multi-person quests or forced to raid or anything like that. It's all a choice. There is like, no MMO in existence I can think of that you can do the entire thing by yourself because that wouldn't be an MMO, that would just be an RPG.

Ultima Online!

Unless you count selling items. Then it wasn't.

I think the only times I actually interacted with people were my friends, and the time I joined a player-run city.

And technically, The Sims Online you could do solo. Considering it was essentially an interactive chat room though, that would suck.

Sims Online doesn't count! If Sims Online counts as an MMO then Second Life counts as a First Person Shooter. And I'm gonna stick with games made in, at least, the last decade.

That's not exactly true. If you don't do the mission lines in FFXI, you don't get the rewards. Anything from Safehold access to the CoP rings... You don't have to have those things, but you'll be judged if you don't.

Same holds true for WoW though, I'd guess! So you're right. :)

Not really--the only thing you need raid gear for is...more raiding. What I find WoW players expect you to do more of is reputation grinds, and those are soloable.

Oh good. That was my plan! I just don't know which one I "need" to do next or want to do...

These walrus people ones are awfully nice (easy and 500 rep each for only three of them!). I hope whichever one I do next is just as nice.

Well, it was just an example but in the end I would imagine that you would agree that there is a large chunk of WoW that is still group oriented (instances, raids, Arena Teams, battlegrounds (this one is kinda meh cause you don't really have to work as a team all the time), some achievements, high level high player # quests). You can choose not to do any of those things and still be fine with the game, although people will probably still get on your back about being gimp but you don't have to do them depending on what you want out of the game.

That's kinda how I'm seeing FFXIV ending up, except with more of an SE flare on it so more of a focus on storyline and storytelling instead of how WoW works on it's "story"...I guess it's more like a mythos at this point in time though.

There's something that looks like a little boy manthra, so maybe!

I'm just going to stir the pot a little here and point out an MMO that's coming out later this year: Aion.

lokyst and I are planning to preorder the Collector's Edition when it becomes available in Canada.

Crazy thought, but bear with me: have you ever considered playing a single-player RPG?

*laughs* But then I couldn't chat with people!

And I'm glad you commented! I thought I had you on IM, but I guess not. Beanie is totally wrong on that CTY comment. The '2 AF limit' rule applied only to non-freelot stuff. Beanie hates that rule, so she says it the way she wants it to be. Remember Fawk? He used to walk away with 6 or 7 AFs per night, and the rule never changed since then. I called her on it once and she attacked me for it. 9.9

Chat on IM and play games by yourself! My AIM is MertonDew by the way (plus there's several other ways to contact me in my profile if you use something else).

I think the true rule lies somewhere in between, but we may never know since the official website is in a perpetual state of construction.

*snickers* Still under construction, huh? That shouldn't amuse me as much as it does.
