Review: Angus Third Pounder
Jul. 23rd, 2009 04:14 pmMcDonalds corporate office sent out a bunch of free Angus Third Pounder coupons to bloggers in hopes of people trying them and writing up a review. Since I got a free burger, I suppose I owe them a review.
I don't like McDonalds burgers. If I were to eat there at lunch or dinner, I'd get chicken nuggets (which I generally enjoy, even if they're horrible for you). I really, really don't like their burgers at all. They're spongy and tasteless. (Since starting to make my own burgers at home, I'm disliking all fast food burgers. If only they weren't so fast and easy!)
That being said, this Angus burger was better than McDonald's average burger. Still in no way, shape, or form good, but it is better. I suppose if you like their other burgers you might like this one.
I got the bacon one (duh!). It boggles me how many places can make bad bacon. How the heck does McDonalds make tasteless bacon? I pulled a piece out of the burger and ate it. It had no flavor at all, other than the bit of ketchup on it.
I liked the pickles. They weren't fast-food norm pickles (thicker, less floppy). I also like the idea of mustard on a burger. It was about the only thing in the sandwich with flavor, other than the ketchup. Those are the only two things I did like.
If I had paid for the burger, it would have been $4. Even if you like McDonald's burgers, I cannot see this thing as having been worth $4. Honestly? I wouldn't eat another free one. It wasn't worth the calories, however many were in there. (Edit: Holy fuck. That damned burger was 790 calories. GAH.)
So, in closing:
Dear McDonalds,
Please do not send me another coupon for a free one, or any other new sandwich you come up with... not unless it has a reasonable amount of calories and tastes good.
Love,
Thistle

Date: 2009-07-23 11:32 pm (UTC)Speaking of homemade burgers, look at this variation...http://www.bigredkitchen.com/2009/06/white-castle-like-sliders-how-to.html
If I am going to OD on greasy burgers this looks like a tastier way.

Date: 2009-07-24 12:32 am (UTC)That being said, most likely what makes it cost as much as it does is the fact that it's an Angus burger. Angus is the top line meat that grocery stores sell in their meat counters (I know there's higher quality meats, but it's what my old store sold!).
Also as a note, and I have no idea how much condiments they put on it, but it's probably the additions that make it so calorific. Angus is fairly lean as far as beef goes.

Date: 2009-07-24 02:58 am (UTC)I want to /wrist over this. Nearly a day's calories for something that didn't even taste good?

Which is really odd, since it didn't taste any different than their normal burgers...

Date: 2009-07-24 04:26 am (UTC)Ummm... I think I'll show myself out.
I'm not actually sure what happens to most of the stuff that I eat. I mean...I know not enough comes out for what went in but I don't gain weight like, at all o.O I think I am breaking the laws of equivalent exchange or something.

Date: 2009-07-24 02:09 pm (UTC)I couldn't agree more. For some reason my wife loves their cheeseburgers, and I just humor her 'cause...yeah, I can't stand them, or any of McDonalds' other burgers either. If I really feel like I want an Angus burger (or any kind of fast food burger) my money goes to Wendy's or BK.

Date: 2009-07-24 02:29 pm (UTC)And eww. Guess I wasn't that off the mark when I started replacing the word 'angus' with 'anus' every time I saw those burgers advertised on TV.
