The good: Having the day off from work!

The bad: Having no electricity!

Stupid summer, stop approaching so fast! The birds have started making their return. Between them and the cat, I was up at dawn every day of the long weekend. zzz

So, this morning, up at dawn. Showered, did morning stuff, sat down at the computer, started having fun... POOF! Electricity gone!

WTF? Called the electric company. "Sorry, you're not a customer of ours." Buh? Apparently they have an old phone number of mine or something, and I couldn't give them my account number since I do all my payments online with them...

In the hours and hours of no power I hunted down old checkbooks, old enough that I had still been paying them with checks. Account number on check = called them back. And back. And back. Kept getting messages "we know there's no power, blah blah blah, power will be back on or we'll have another estimate by...".

By noon it was still down, so went out for lunch and to try to get gas. Discovered this wasn't just my block or neighborhood without power! Eventually found a place open for lunch, but gave up on finding somewhere to sell me gas (three stations tried, all couldn't sell with no power).

By this afternoon we had power back. Whew. Sure was boring without it!

Ohhh, I HATE being left with no power. It's like. "Hmm... I guess since I don't have internet, I'll watch TV... D'oh! Well okay, maybe I'll just do some laundry... D'oh! Well maybe since I can't cook, I'll order out a pizza. Hmm... no phonebook. I'll just hop and google and search... D'oh!"

Yeah, being without power sucks.

*laughs* Yes! One of the things I decided to do was clean. "Okay, I did this and that, now I'll start the dishwashe-- Bah!"

Being without power sucks. Question: Is there a customary thing you Americans do on President's Day? Like, how on Christmas you open gifts, and thanksgiving you have turkey and stuff like that. All I can think is you'd walk around with old time clothes and like monocles and stuff.

I had the day off to, it's "We wanted a stat holiday in February so we made one" day (AKA, Family Day).

Just shopping/sales. It's one of the big sales day. "PRESIDENT'S DAY SALE, EVERYTHING 50% OFF!", things along that line.

I'll trade you President's Day for Family Day! I'd rather have a holiday for families than presidents.

Um...I think we go around oppressing smaller nations in the name of democracy. Wait, we don't actually need a holiday for that.

Either way, you Canucks should try it sometimes. It's kinda fun.

Ha! That reminds me of the best bumper sticker I ever saw. It went something like "This is America. Respect us or we'll bring democracy to your country".

I giggled 'til I cried.

"I say, old fellow, jolly good Presidents' Day."
"Oh, quite, quite!"

Wow, that's kinda wacky. Was it storm-related? We didn't lose power at my place in any of the blizzards so far this year, so it seems weird that in a place with far nicer weather, you guys would lose power.

There was fog in the morning and the power company said it was "transformer related" so either a car hit a pole or something just failed...

Only thing I can say was at least it was daytime when it happened, so I was able to open the curtains and have enough light to read by. Losing power is lots worse once the sun goes down.

We never lose power when it's nice outside, only when it's 100 degrees outside and you have to hang out in the library so you don't die.

Ack, that's not good! It was actually nicer outside than in my apartment. 68 outside, 65 inside! (Our walls are made of stone, so they hold the cold|heat and radiate it back in. Fun times in the summer!)
