I was supposed to be headed to bed, but the news caught my eye.

Brad Goehring, a Republican candidate for Congress in California's 11th district, wrote on his Facebook page:

"If I could issue hunting permits, I would officially declare today opening day for liberals. The season would extend through November 2 and have no limits on how many taken as we desperately need to 'thin' the herd."

That's not even the worst part, that's an old right-wing "joke". A spokeperson for the Tea Party came out and said that he was a "good person" with a "good heart and a good spirit" and she was sure the media was overreacting about the statement.

Does no one have a grip on reality? What the hell is up with these right-wing folks? Sarah Palin pulled this crap as well (people had to "reload" against the liberals). What is it with right-wing people* that they think it's okay to make death threats against people they don't agree with?

This makes my head hurt so much...

(*Yes, every right-winger isn't sitting at home cleaning their guns, but this is their leadership, people who they would vote for, did vote for...)

Yeah the threats of violence and violent-ish rhetoric is pretty inexcusable.

However, if there's a silver lining, it's that "we need to thin the herd" is another way of saying "more people disagree with me than agree with me, and I know this, and I'm sounding more and more desparate about it, and not even bothering to hide the fact that I'm not representing a majority of US citizens".

Sheez, in Canada people get uppity if one politician calls another one stupid... Well, the few people that actually listen to what the politicians up here say anyways...

I don't know, I laughed at Ralph Klein's comment about Belinda Stronach, saying that she "never had a conservative bone in her body...well, maybe one" (a reference to Peter McKay)

There are bunches of cars that drive around in my area with liberal hunting permits. Hysterical, ain't it?

When people start complaining about not being able to have guns, I always wonder what they're planning to use those guns *for*. They're not complaining about hunting rifles.

Honestly, I advocate gun ownership. I've been hunting once or twice in my life. The few firearms I own are designed for very specific purposes - 1 easily concealable for short range, 1 for dependability and medium range, and 1 for very long range. All 3 are designed for use against humans. Without going into too much of a rant, the point is to have weaponry enabling me to put up a decent fight should a government, foreign or ours, oppress the population, or should the government fall entirely and we're left in a state of lawlessness. In the former case, I don't expect to be capable of fighting head to head against our military (one reason I often hear cited as why that interpretation of the 2nd Amendment is stupid), but I'd like to be able to assist in a guerilla campaign (I'm pretty handy at chemistry too - waging a mild campaign against traffic cameras in my area presently).

For the record, I don't threaten with violence casually. I'm a rather kind, gentle person, with a reputation for being fair, laid-back, good humored, and fiercely loyal. I've harmed a handful of people in my life, and all but 1 were in self-defense (barfights, mostly).

I find such republican jokes about 'hunting liberals' to be in exceedingly poor taste.

People are so wacky. I had a seemingly sane friend who was flat-out convinced he needed to own guns (multiple!) because when "society fell" he'd be able to protect his home with them.

Seriously? That's a big concern? Ugh.

The collapse of any civilization is pretty much inevitable. It happened to Sumer, to Carthage, to Rome. It's only a matter of time before it happens to all of us. It may not be in our lifetime -- I certainly hope not! -- but it can and will happen.

That being said, I don't own a gun and don't want to. If the Canadian government collapses I figure I'm pretty much fucked whether I have a gun or not.

If I had a gun, I'd be way more likely to hurt myself than someone else... and if I did hurt someone else, even if they had wanted to hurt me, I'd feel awful. I'm much more a hiding person than a killing one.

Oh, I wouldn't worry. People act like that when they have nothing substantial to offer. Logic and common sense will always prevail in this...

Wait. Um...I think we are all screwed.
