([livejournal.com profile] itsbacon! Don't click on the cut or comments! Or else! :) )

I love RP for many reasons, however there's a unique good thing in my current RP: The character I play has a thing for music, and various other characters are teaching him songs to sing. RL songs are being used, though generally they're not popular stuff you'd hear on most radio stations. I'm learning so many good new songs!

I heard a story about this group a year or so ago on NPR. I have no idea why I didn't follow it up then...

The Shankill Butchers by The Decemberists!

I love how slow it is, love the guy's voice, love how simple the music is! I'm not sure if I'm in love with the lyrics for the lyrics or for how amazingly well they fit IC.

They used to be just like me and you,
They used to be sweet little boys.
But something went horribly askew,
Now killing is their only source of joy.

Tell me that doesn't perfectly fit death knights! Really, all the lyrics fit DKs so perfectly well... (To see them all, go to the youtube page and right below the video click on the little arrow down thingie to expand the comment to full, they're all in there.)

I can't stop listening to it! Over and over! Though he likely will never see this, much <3 to Franzis for using this song!

Edit: Google is damned scary. I decided to check and see if Franzis maybe had a LJ, so I googled "Franzis RP" to see what would come up (I always start more general first, to see what interesting other things might be out there). This post came up as result #4. Less than 30 seconds after I posted it. Google is stalking me!

I assume when you say RP you mean "role play". But what exactly is it? What do you do?

Yep! I always describe it as cooperative story writing. Each person has generally one character, and that character has a life the same way as real people do. So when your character runs into another character, the two of you (or however many people are there) take turns writing.

I opened a random log of some old RP so I could give you a sample. Two characters confronting each other in a city:

Thistle writes: Head lifting and eyes narrowing, he watches her. "You don't kill without reason? But just yesterday you said if I came around you when you were in uniform that you would 'hurt' me. So which is it? Or have I somehow become a threat to the 'Empire'," his tone twists on that word, mocking how she think it's such an important thing, "based only on who I choose to eat a meal with?" Lips pressed together into a frown, there is sharp interest in his eyes when she says there are Alchemists working on the issue. If they solve it, if he can get the info from her, he'll be able to pass it on...

Nai writes: "You associate with corsairs. You have stated to me repeatedly that you are going to continue training as a corsair, despite my warnings to stop. Yes, you are considered a threat, and better to be removed before you can do any damage. I would stop you now, but you caught me at a disadvantage..." Given she's weaker right now... One ear quirks towards him at the sudden keen interest, though. Just how much will he tell the corsairs? Hell, how much -has- he told them. Brow knitting faintly, she looks away. "You should be killed on the spot. You are a walking liability. You know far too much about the Immortals to be allowed to associate with the enemy. That is valid reason. What if I were with a corsair and I knew their secrets? What if I then joined the Immortals? Would your precious elf not hunt me down to attempt to keep those vital secrets safe?"

Does that help?

Yes. That helps. Does this all happen live? Or do you post something, and then some time later another person posts something, and then later you post something?

I've always done it live/real time. Generally, when people aren't multitasking, the wait for a pose is just a minute or two, so it's really not that bad at all. RPing by email (or over LJ through leaving comments) seems to be more popular these days. The old style text-based games are vanishing, but it's a chicken-egg thing: I'm not sure if they're going away because people are RPing on LJ/email or people are RPing LJ/email because there are less of them around.

Live RP reminds me of something else.

I was thinking it kinda reminds me of cyber sex... though I guess that's a different kind of RP.

Oh! Could be different, yeah. Could also be part of "normal" RP too though. Since you're RPing a character's whole life, oftentimes sex is part of that. Some people RP out the actual act, detail by detail, others fade to black and just say it happened.
