About a year ago, twenty or so men gang raped a teenage girl. They estimated that forty more people were watching/recording it. No one reported it.

Today, the trials for the men are starting. The news report actually made me glare at the TV. One of the men said:

"She was so drunk, she didn't know what was going on." Ortega then said "I wasn't the only one" and "She wanted it. [Jane Doe] wanted it. She wanted all of us."

If a woman is "so drunk she doesn't know what's going on" and you have sex with her, it's rape! *froth**frenzy* At least him saying that will mean he's going to be found guilty of something.

Edit: Two different police officers broke down crying while testifying about her condition. I hope these men end up in prison their whole lives and experience the same thing done to them every single day.

I remember when this happened. It boggles me that it's taken so long for the trails. Ugh. The whole thing made me sick back then, and it makes me sick now. People can be so disgusting.

At least they've been locked up while waiting. (I hope! Oakland is a really poor area, so I'd hope they wouldn't be able to make bail, if it was offered at all.)

I think we'll be lucky if even one person gets half of what they deserve for that shit.

Fucked up legal system I tell you.

I know. :/ I can only hope that awful things happen to them in the time they'll serve in prison.

I can't even think of a punishment that's close to justice. How do you assess the proper penalty for crimes that heinous?

My gut instinct is to put them down like rabid dogs -- anyone that vile can't be reformed in my opinion.

I suppose the closest thing is to go with Thistle's wish and imprison them for life where they'll get the pleasure of being assaulted frequently. Rapists are pretty low on the prison hierarchy.

People who rape children are definitely the bottom of the prison hierarchy. Generally not for long though. A some guys serving life sentences have teenage daughters of their own, and take it very personally.

Yup. Wife beaters are pretty low too, but child molesters are the lowest tier if I am remembering right.

I think you're correct. I enjoy reading about prison life, and I think you two are both right.

I think life in prison would be a whole lot more punishment than death, especially if they're getting raped during it. From what I understand, rapists (especially child rapists, and the girl was in school) are fair game for anyone. So... hopefully.

Part of me feels really bad that I'm wishing pain on another person, but I can't help it.

At the risk of sounding like a horrible person (which I probably am, but), that's why I dislike the death penalty. It's over and done so quickly. The laaaarge majority of people who've done stuff like that deserve to rot in jail for the rest of their lives and know they will never have a chance to be free, to see the ones they love, to make anything out of their lives. Then again, the idea of keeping all those people in prison on taxpayers' money really blows too.

I know what you mean, though. It's probably awful that I want to see these loser suffer as much as that poor girl... but ugh, I can't not wish horrible things on them.

I think a good solution to the fact that we have to pay for them to be there is to make them work. Stupid work (making license plates!). If they don't want to work, take away what few good things they have (access to TV, books, heck put them in with a worse group of people -- make them share a cell with someone from a gang that hates their race!).

I consider it meaning I'm not perfect. (Which gets a big "Duh!". :P ) We should be better than that, but few folks are.

That, O Thistle, is a wonderful idea and kinda makes a person wonder why it hasn't been put into action yet. It's logical. Free manual labor, they can keep themselves in prison. Sheesh, it seems so obvious.

One person has! I actually kinda stole it from him. Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona. He makes the prisoners sleep in tents, not buildings (and in Arizona, summers can stay at 100+ for a long time, and cold in winter!). All the prisoners are forced into chain gangs (literally! Chained ankle-to-ankle). They make them do all sorts of work, from picking up trash to minor construction/repair. And, in the rare case there's no work to do, he makes the dig and then fill in ditches!

They get fed the worst, old food around. It's still food, but no one would willingly eat it. No TV, no cigarettes, it's a darned miserable place to be!

Ah yes, incriminating yourself. This is why lawyers were invented.

To translate, I'm calling the guy retarded. He already was. But he's even moreso.

Age of consent was created for a reason. It essentially says that a person under that age does not have the rational to make a proper decision in regards to sexual acts.

And being drunk also lowers your rationality.

Gee, I wonder if she was rational enough to say "F*** me in every hole, all 20+ of you."

/sarcasm

To agree with previous commenters, injuring children is considered the absolute worst thing to be thrown into jail for. Many of the people placed in jail with those charges have to be put into solitary confinement because the other prisoners WILL kill them.

Exactly. Someone has to be able to give consent, otherwise it's rape. If they're too young, too high, too drunk... then you're raping her, bud.
