I'm about as far from an adventurous eater as you can get. Making myself try new foods is like pulling teeth, so it sort of surprised me when I found Greek yogurt in my cart last week. I had been hearing a lot about it online (It's so much better for you! It tastes so much better! It's like a dessert!), and it was on sale, so I decided to try it.

I finished all my regular yogurt, so had to bring the Greek kind in for today's breakfast. I eyed it for a long while before opening it. Sniffed it. Didn't smell any different. I left the open container alone for a while, watching it. Nothing happened. Finally had to taste it.

It's really very little different than regular yogurt. Maybe a slightly sharper flavor. Way thicker. I would not in any way, shape, or form call it dessert-like.

It has slightly more calories than mine usually has (100 for Yoplait Light, 140 for this container of Greek). The Greek container claims to have twice the protein of normal, but in this case it's nearly three times (Yoplait has 5 grams, Greek has 14 -- there might be a container size difference though).

When it comes to flavor, Greek loses big time. Supposedly this is strawberry flavor, but all I can taste is the tang of yogurt. Yoplait is AMAZING. Those commercials where the guy thinks he's really eating apple turnover but it's yogurt? 100% accurate. They taste just like what they're supposed to. Yoplait is dessert-like. On the other hand, Yoplait's second ingredient is high-fructose corn syrup, so... (Greek's third is "evaporated cane juice", so it's not innocent of sugar either.)

I'll finish the Greek containers I bought, but I don't think I'll be buying them again. (Or maybe I'll try a different brand if I see one, give it a second chance.) If I was still not eating meat, when I'd stick with Greek for the easy protein, but that's no longer an issue for me.

I love Greek yogurt... because it tastes like sour, tangy yogurt! I eat mine plain or with just a bit of honey stirred in. P: So, uh, if you like sweet/flavored yogurt, I can see how it would not be for you...

Yeah, I like sweet a whole lot better. I still have half the container sitting here next to me, and usually I would have gobbled it all down by now.

It's not bad, it's just a bit strongly flavored for me. *shares with you!*

I never heard of sweet Greek yogurt! When I think Greek yogurt it is the stuff you use to make that sauce on gyros...I might have to look for that next time, since I do like to try new things. XD

That's the kind I'm familiar with, too. Though, you can take regular and sweeten it slightly with honey and that's really good! ...Weird, to some people, but I love it. It's so thick and more savory than really sweet, it's almost a meal in and of itself. Or breakfast, or whatever.

I'm finding that as well. After I eat "normal" yogurt, I'm starving again right away. I've only eaten half of this container (haven't even touched the apple I brought to be the rest of my breakfast) and I'm not starving. I'm not stuffed full, but I'm not GOING TO EAT MY DESK NOW, STAND BACK!.

They did have a plain option, but a whole bunch of fruit or honey flavors as well. I think I could see this making a better sauce than eating it straight.

Hope you like it!

I hate yogurt straight, but use it in various sauces. Tzatziki is the sauce for gyros, and I frequently use it in curries (chicken tikka masala most notably).

Yeah, I don't overly like it straight, but it's a healthy breakfast, so...

Yeah, Yoplait is so doctored with sugar, it really is more like eating a dessert than "yogurt". :/

Yeah, it's kind of lose-lose. You can get fat free, which is full of sugar. You can get sugar free, which has lots of fat. I might just really stick with this Greek stuff. It's not good, but it's not awful, and as a bonus it seems to keep me full better.

Danone is my favourite. Vanilla and then I add a few of my own choc chips.

I'll look for that! This is Chobani brand (never heard of it before, myself).

I was going to ask you this. I love love love "Greek Gods" brand honey yogurt. (They have other flavors I'm not so fond of.) I get the full-fat version, though, which is about as rich as ice cream. Yum! But not really good for you.

There were only two brands at the supermarket today, the one I originally had and (surprisingly) Yoplait. Hopefully as it becomes more popular, we'll get more brands!

Oh man, I wish I knew people had been telling you it was like a dessert. I would have kicked them in the face over the internet.

I use it in smoothies, but only the plain kind. ANY kind of flavored yogurt... shit, I might as well eat some damn ice cream there is so much sugar in there.

And I'd have cheered you on! It is thicker than normal yogurt, but that does not a dessert make!

And agreed on sugar, too. I bought more of the Greek kind while shopping today. Switching over!

I recommend getting some of the no-calorie Torani flavored syrup to put in there - it helps flavor the plain yogurt without like nine grams of sugar being in there.

(SERIOUSLY WTF NINE GRAMS?!?!)

you can make your own yogurt easily. then the second ingredient won't be hfcs. you can get used to it without sugar, but i still like adding a teaspoon of molasses sugar, with a dash of cardamom.

Good idea, but making my own is more than I want to do. :) Maybe one day!
