In their continuing effort to be a kind, loving party, supporting all races and genders, the Republican party is attempting to redefine rape for us. "Rape is only really rape if it involves force."

So, daterape drug? Raping the mentally ill? Raping coma victims? "No means no"? Not rape anymore!

Google is wise. I searched for "republicans force rape" to try to get confirmation of that story (successful), and Google asked:

Did you mean: republicans for rape

Yep, that's about what it comes down to.

OH YEAH, IT'S PROBABLY THE WOMAN'S FAULT ANYWAY FOR WEARING A SKIRT. HER KNEES WERE SHOWING. HER KNEES! HOW CAN ANY MAN BE EXPECTED TO CONTROL HIMSELF?! SHE WAS ASKING FOR IT!

Blah.

Edit: I was reading a thread about this subject on a LJ comm, and came across the cutest icon:

Yep. And there are a couple women who are signing this too. Just a couple, but still!

I've been angry all evening about this.

Edit: The only thing that makes this better is that in all my reading tonight I haven't seen one single person agreeing with it. It's all "FUCK YOU!". That's something. All these people will die eventually. The country will get better as younger folks grow up. It won't be perfect, but it will get better.

You know, the idea of helping people who get raped and impregnated from it get an abortion (or if the pregnancy endangers the mothers life) is probably one of the most middle of the road, common sense, reasonable things I have ever heard come out of American politics.

Go figure there would be a bunch of idiots trying to shit all over it.

I've said before hereabouts - I am conservative (technically, paleoconservative). At no point in my adult life (since I've been a legal voter) has the Republican party represented my interests. I've viewed most Repub politicians like misbehaving dogs in my house. The sooner I get them out, the better, but if I have to deal with them for a little while then there are measures I can take to minimize the damage they do.

Shit like this makes me think they should be kept in a small fenced-in kennel. Too dangerous to be allowed to run free, but maybe someone will have the time, patience, and love to teach them right from wrong. I certainly don't.

Picture this happening while Bush had still been in office. Obama would veto it, but Bush?

Perhaps we need to picture them as misbehaving rabid bears instead...

If we imagine them as rabid bears, Sarah Palin wins.

I find the people's use of "fuck them" in a case of a definition change of rape to be interesting.

I had a guy in my class the other day, we were doing presentations on our career plans. Guy wanted to be a lawyer, and he made a point to say that some of his views are hot topics and specifically said "Abortion is legalized murder." Never again in the presentation was it brought up.

I know that was off the main topic. I just wanted to get that off my chest cause it's been irritating me.

And here is where I will make jokes!

One time I tried to slip a girl some roofies, but she came down with shingles.

If abortion is murder, are blowjobs cannibalism?

And here is where I just make a general statement to anti-abortionists.

Will you still love that child you kept when he or she turns out to be gay/lesbian?

Okay, I'm done. I'mma go into my corner and shut up. =x

Ha! And I learned a better term for anti-abortion folks: Forced birth advocates. Seems much more accurate!

Truth be told, I'm on neither side of the fence, regardless of what the "general statement" I made said. If someone tries to discuss it with me, I will put a "don't care" face on. If they push the issue, I will probably throw out that line I used, which makes me actually seem to have an opinion as the downside of it.

I understand both sides of the argument. It all boils down to "I don't care."

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go eat some chicken embryo.

I've been quasi-following this story (as I've been quasi-following everything else in the world right now; my dissertation is eating my life) and it horrifies and enrages me.

(Disclaimer: I'm just stating my opinion in the following two paragraphs. I'm not trying to start a flame war, so please nobody scream at me.)

I am generally not what I'd consider a rampant feminist. I'm happy for men to open doors for me and I don't care if you call me a mailman. But when it comes to the issue of abortion, I feel very strongly that it is my body and I'm violently offended by the idea that a congress that is predominantly male is trying to tell me what I can and can't do with it.

Also, as a biologist who realizes overpopulation is a huge problem, I admit I'm somewhat practical in my view of when a fetus becomes a human being. This is an admittedly touchy subject and I don't mean to trash-talk anyone with a different timeline. Like abortion, it's a very personal issue. But like abortion, I think it has to be a personal choice, not a law enforced by somebody else.

So that's my rant on pro-choiceness. Of course the corollary is don't be stupid, use birth control in the first place, but as this whole new rape issue demonstrates: It is inevitable that a lot of people are stupid.

Anyway, in light of my views on abortion in the first place, the "rape isn't always rape" crap that's flying about right now really, really makes me want to scream and throw things. That's about the only articulate thing I can say about it; it makes me that angry.

My flist is mostly the choir for me to preach to. :P I have... I think two people who would rarely agree with my general political stances. One of those two people rarely reads LJ-- heck, both of them might not. So this is generally a pretty safe place from flames!

That being said, this won't be surprising at all: I agree with everything you said. 100%. If I were a postal person, I'd have no issues with being called a mailman (policeman, fireman, any of those generic job terms). I often say "hey guys" to groups of women. However, when it comes to my body, that's a totally different story. The idea of anyone trying to make laws as to what I can do with/about it...

This whole thing makes me so mad.

Very interesting article, very well written and I agree with pretty much every single word of it.
