Know what annoys me? ("Rude people!" "Work!" "The wind blowing!" "...there are things that don't annoy you?") Shush up, no. When people ruin things for other people because they just cannot keep their mouth shut.

I make money in MMOs. I make a heck of a lot of money. I make more money and make it faster than anyone I know. I did it in FFXI. I do it in WoW. Do you know why? Because I do the work to find out what sells. I do research. I watch markets. I track other seller. I do my homework.

Know why else I make money? Because I keep my darned mouth shut.

"Thistle! I'm poor! Tell me what I should sell to make money!"
Yeah, and shoot myself in the foot by inviting more sellers into my markets?

Someone with too much money has been posting how to make gold on WoW. This would be all well and good if she were just hurting herself. But she's not, she's hurting me and every other seller willing to work for their knowledge.

Don't believe me? Two days ago, one of my markets was amazingly healthy. Today it's so horribly awful I lost money just looking at the AH for the mats. All because one person couldn't keep her mouth shut and her blog posts get picked up by everyone.

Do the damned work or get the hell out. :| Mumble.

The exact same method I used to make 40k in the stock market last year.

Ha, that brings up a good point. I'm backwards! I'll do all that work on a game for fake money, but I have zero interest in doing it RL for real money. I've often wished I could make my willingness to work in a game carry over to RL.

I'm glad it worked out for you though! :D

I wish my dad was as good at it as you.

I'd try stocks myself if he didn't make it leave such a bitter taste in my mouth.

My mother, too. She lost so much of her retirement money. :/

Yeah any bit of money my dad has he puts in the stock markets, but he's such a wuss he never sells thinking it will always go higher...I think this is one thing that led to my parents' divorce actually...really sick.

If you don't to it right (like my dad and your mom) it's basically the same as a gambling addiction. They probably don't even realize.

If you're not a daytrader, the only way you'll get money out of the stock market, other than by being incredibly lucky with your timing, is to buy and hold for a long time.

Don't fool yourself into thinking that you can time the market.

For my mother, it was a case of trusting the wrong person. She wasn't trying to do the trading herself.

I dunno after 20+ years of doing it I'd hope my dad would have made SOME money.

Loose lips sink ships

Another one come to mind with this whole situation: "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." It's basically the same thing with this situation. They have given a man a fish and he is eating for the day. Once he finishes his fish he still won't know how to fish and will need to wait until someone gives him another or he learns how to fish.

Given that most people are too lazy to learn the ins and outs of the AH and market trends and such they still won't do it even after messing up a market for certain items. Plus if they destroy the market they will eventually go away since it won't be profitable and then it should naturally even out to what it was before.

Exactly. And I can only hope they'll go away! The market they discovered is really easy, so I don't have that much hope. :/ Actually, at this point I hope Blizz nerfs it -- I'd rather have the market be gone than lazy people making money on it.

I am probably giving the said player too much credit, but this can be a valid strategy *if* there is a plan B or plan C involved. The idea would be to deliberately expose plan A and draw attention away from plan B or plan C.

Then again, it's more likely that the said player happens to crave attention...

Ha! That's a clever idea. I suspect it's the attention thing though, that and the fact that she hit gold cap so she really had no need to keep making more money. Sure technically you could ship cash off to a mule and keep making it, but if you hit the game's intended gold cap... you could basically buy everything multiple times over, so what's the point?

Man, I want to ask if you lost the same market I did but if you didn't, I'd be giving away MY $$$ secrets. ;_;

That does make things more difficult! It's generally why I try never to speak of gold on-game, it's too big of a chance of bringing up subjects best not spoken of!

It's very true. o_o I comisserate with your losses. But markets tend to bounce back over teh space of a couple of weeks. And no matter /what/ people buy or sell, and I'm ok with mentioning it, air volatiles still sell very well. Stable market, go!

Date: 2011-03-02 08:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Yes! I love air! I have two alchemists doing the transmute every day. I'm seriously thinking of rearranging my other three 80+ alts to put alchemy on each of them.

And yeah, I'm hoping that this currently crashed market will one day recover. The raw mats are so overpriced right now, I hope people go away and forget about it.

Good luck with your markets!

and yours! :D (bet i could guess yours, and vice versa, from alt profession list alone...)

From: [identity profile] thistle-chaser.livejournal.com
Hee, maybe! I have almost all the professions covered, though I only use a couple of them. I've never had a BS, and I had a maxed LW but ended up dropping it in a shuffle and never redid it even though I have an open profession slot (on one of my two alchemists...).
