Sometimes I feel like one of those crotchity old people on a sitcom, the ones who go to war against some story or company. My mortal enemy? Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Like In & Out, Five Guys enjoys a cult following. If you believe the members of either cult, their food is nothing less than manna from heaven.

I don't like either place much.

I had given up on Five Guys. I don't like their burgers. Their fries are outstanding when they're made right, but nine times out of ten they're crap. At $12 for burger/small fries/small drink, it's so very not worth it. When I dared to voice that opinion on a LJ food comm, a number of people told me to try their hot dogs. "Best hot dog ever!" "Best food ever!" "Best thing you'll ever eat!"

I do like hot dogs, so I decided to give them one last chance.

First off: It was $5 for one hot dog. How insane is that? Not for hot dog/fries/drink, $5 for one single hot dog in a crappy cheap bun. How was the hot dog itself? Not good. It was okay enough that I ate it, but I wouldn't come back and order it again even if they offered it for $1. And the fact that it was $11 for one hot dog, crappy fries, and a drink? What a waste!

Goodbye, Five Guys, I shall never be visiting you again.

In crazy news, I think I'm going to get the Professor title on Dandelion. Dandelion is basically a five year old pothead boy in the body of a giant werewolf, so the title would be highly amusing. I've done all of my digging in EK thus far and have 10 rares, so to get 10 more from all the other places shouldn't be much of an issue. (Edit: Got three tonight, so seven more needed.)

I have no other goals left, not even reaching 85 (he's 82 now, 85 will happen when it happens), so working on the title would be something to do.

I'll boycott 5 guys with you!! Well, not that I can eat there anyway. Stupid peanuts.

My favorite hot dogs ever are Weinerschnitzel!!

We used to have a Weinerschnitzel near us, but I never tried them before they shut the location down. They always have such good coupons/deals, I do want to try them!

And yeah, 5 Guys is not somewhere to go if you have peanut allergies!

Where do you live? There are a couple around here if you really want you should be able to, especially if you went to the one at The Plant shopping center. They are pretty close by. There is one on first and one on fourth and taylor (the one we go to all the time).

If you want a hot dog it's seriously the place to go, I go there because they have a Turkey dog option...I hate beef dogs...

Yeah, too bad I guess? I don't think I am missing much in the case of 5 guys at least.

There's a Weinerschnitzel near my dentist, I could always make the trip there. I bet there might be a closer one, too... We had had one maybe two minutes from me, but alas they became ANOTHER coffee place. zzz

I don't get the hype about either place now that they have locations here and I've tried them. I think Carl's Jr. has much better burgers. However, I think complaining about the pricing given your location is a bit silly. The prices are high because you live where there's an extremely high cost of living. 5 Guys doesn't cost anywhere near that much here (I think we paid $15 to feed all of us, though we just tend to get one burger and fries to split between the kids).

Yes, I'm fully aware that our prices are higher, and I'm generally fine with that fact. However, $5 for a hot dog is high even for here, especially when from a fast food place. For $5 I could get a good-sized sub sandwich from many places, Subway and others. This was a below average hot dog on a horrible quality bun.

Hubby and I do enjoy Five Guys, but yeah, the pricing is prohibitive. Our burger joint of choice (when we're being naughty on the diet) is a local chain called Andy's. The burgers are just as good, the service is sit-down-and-be-waited-upon, and the prices are much lower; we can eat there for under $15 and that's WITH the tip.

I think if this Five Guys had the quality I hear about in other locations, it would be closer to worth it. But what's the use of getting a giant serving of fries if maybe four fries total are worth eating?

Yeah, the burgers are fine, but totally not worth the price. If I want to splurge on a stupidly overpriced burger, I'll go to Beck's Prime and get some really good sweet potato fries in the bargain.

If you're feeling ridiculously indulgent, there's also a market grill here where you literally pick a steak from the meat counter, and they grind it up into your burger.

I totally feel you. I've had both, and the people who took me kept staring at me like I was supposed to experience some religious epiphany and I was like, look, it's fine, but it's just a freaking hamburger.

Yeah. "Fine" sums it up for me. It's a fine fast food burger. Not outstanding, not god in my mouth, it's a fast food burger.

People are odd.

I'm tempted to hit 5guys tonight to see how bad the price difference is between west coast and Appalachian south.

Their hotdogs are utter crap, agreed. My college's town had a local chain (only 3 stores in the region, so "chain" is stretching it) called Skin's (after the owner, Skin Thrasher). AMAZING hotdogs, $1 per. Any visit guaranteed walking out with a big full of delicious chili-laden wonder for whatever change you could dig out of the couch.

Mmm, Skins sounds good! And such cheap food would be really nice!

Even the so-called "dollar menu" at the fast food places aren't. All of our "dollar menu" items are $1.30-$1.75! I suppose the chain is making them call it that, because the food sure as heck doesn't cost $1.
